Tamiya Mesh

Hi guys,

Does anyone know if you can buy Tamiya mesh by itself. If not the Tamiya stuff, does anyone know of a similar product? Bear in mind i mean the cloth type stuff and not the etched metal kind.

Are you looking for something to use as a replacement mesh, or something else - there are tons of alternatives out there.

You can use anything from pantyhose/stockings to window netting to wire mesh screen or plastic craft screen dependant on the intended application.

Ive been looking and asking around for the same thing. I believe I made a thread about this same issue several months ago. In my case im looking for the cloth mesh that comes included in some kits for front grills. I tried photo etch and its not bad, but the mesh is, in my opinion, easier to work with. I tried some of the big name arts and crafts stores here in Los Angeles but havent found anything that I liked. I doubt anyone sells it individually and we're going to have to do what freakray typed, look at alternatives such as his window netting suggestion. But if anyone's found the mesh sold seperately, please let me know.

Have you guys tried local train model stores? I picked up a mesh seemingly made of nylon. It doesn't even have any brand name, but just a mesh in clear plastic bag, so I can't tell you in detail. Train model stores generally carry tons of raw material, so I'd try those places first.

Have you tried splatter screen?

I tried it, but it is not fine enough for my builds. It may work for some situations.

Yeah, I wanted to know this too. Window screen is way too big for any grille applications.

a noobie question, whenever i try and glue the mesh it never stays, how do you glue it??

What kind of glue do you use? Cement is a solvent type of glue, meaning is actually dissolves a bit of the two materials, and when it cures, they are chemically welded together. This doesn't work, however, if the two materials are not the same. Some of the plastic rod, tubing, and sheets that are available are not styrene but rather ABS, and not all styrene cements will work on it. There are a few that are supposed to work for everything, but that's iffy at times.

The mesh is not the same material as the body, so it needs a glue like CA/superglue or epoxy. Super Tacky Glue (Looks like Elmer's and dries clear but is quite strong and flexible) should also work.

You have the same problem with clear plastic parts, metal photoetch detail parts, and anything made of resin: Cement will not work on it, so you need to use something else (Be careful with using superglue on clear parts as it can fog them up).

I always use double sided carpet tape to fix the mesh in position.No chance of ruining any paintwork etc.Also if you get the mesh slightly in the wrong position you can peel it off and re-stick it.It's also clear so you cannot see it.Fix the tape in position on the model around the grill opening etc,peel away the backing and stick the mesh on.Available on a roll at most DIY stores.

I use 5-minute 2-part epoxy. Dries clear, does not affect the body, creates a strong bond and adjustments can be made to the alignment quite easily...for the first 3 minutes that is...;-)>

Theres an isle at hobby lobby that has really fine copper mesh, kind of like the fujimi mesh. It comes in big sheets of 3 i believe, costs about 8-10 dollars, but its not in the model section its somewhere in arts and craft. Im sure it can be painted, i just havent picked any of it up yet .
