1984 Toyota Supra 2.8GT

This is a restoration of a model found in the loft recently that I made about 22 years ago! It was hand painted and a bit of a mess! All glass needs to be replaced.

It is inspired by Barry Sheene's 1985 British Saloon Car Championship car.

I didn't like the original side mouldings and built in mud flaps so removed them, I also noticed that the race version also had them omitted!

I was also not happy with the size of the wheel arch openings and reduced them slightly by filling etc.

I was orignally going to use similar wheels to those used on Barry Sheene's car but will probably go for the 5 spoke ones that I have painted the spokes gun metal with.

Comments welcome!

Completely messed up the size of the images, all far too small except for the last 4!

Thats a sweet supra. I love the rims, I say go with the 5 spoke. The color is awsome. It is looking so much better! Nice resto project.

Looking good!! I'm a big fan of the Celica/Supra MKII, which company made this one? I've built both the Aoshima and Fujimi versions, both having their respective pros and cons about them.

Nice!
Looks like the Tamiya kit (the driver figure gives it away).
MPC made a version too. It was the only one with an engine till Fujimi came out with their 'high mecha' version.

Thanks, yes it is the Tamiya kit. It's pretty good too the shape looks to be spot on to me. It originally had an option for working headlights so the underside would need work to look correct due to the space for an AA battery, switch etc. I'm completing it kerbside so will be leaving it as it came out of the box apart from lowering the suspension and trying to add some negative camber to the front wheels for a more realistic race inspired style.

Awesome!! I knew that it looked different. It just stood out because it looked proportionally correct to me compared to the Fujimi and Aoshima versions. Plus, those stock wheels are cool!!! Plan on keeping them? If not, I'd like to take them off your hands. Looking forward to seeing more progress on the model.

I would like to keep the tyres but may part with the wheels. send me a an e-mail and we can sort out postage etc.

Also, have you seen this version by Arii, it's available at Hobby Link Japan:

http://www.hlj.com/product/ARI31162

The box art shows it with the original wheels (although the completed one has the later type perhaps it comes with both, the body shape looks good too! So you may prefer to get this instead!)

Re: 1984 Toyota Supra 2.8GT

Yeah, I actually had seen that and will probably pick it up since it's not too expensive. I have the one of the Fujimi versions that has those same style wheels (later version I guess). I guess I like the one's that you have pictured because they look similar, if not the same as the stock GT-S wheels for the AE86 here in the states. I'd like to use them in one build of a bone stock Corolla with no mods what so ever, maybe even scratch build some US bumpers for it too. But yeah, I'll order that kit and if it doesn't have those wheels, I'll let you know so that we can work out a price.

Did you strip the body? Looks like you did. If so, great start (over) lol.

Re: 1984 Toyota Supra 2.8GT

In the US the plain version 'luxury' had those wheels, while the 'sport' version had the spoked wheels along with the plastic fender flairs and the funky spoiler 'shade' over the rear window.
I loved my '83 Supra, but I don't miss it.

Re: 1984 Toyota Supra 2.8GT

Painted the black trim, made new glass from acetate, lowered the suspension and managed to add a bit of negative camber. I will probably lower the rear a little more yet.

Interior and detail stuff next!
