98 GTP goofy ignition problem (help?)

HELP! I have a 98 gtp (3.8 supercharged) with about 140,000miles. Lately for some reason the car wont start if i turn the key. I could (past tense) get the car to start if i used the remote start. Now even the remote start wont start the car. The car will turn over with the auto start (and sometimes with the key) but will not start. I got the car to a circuit city thinking mabey something screwed up witht he autostart. They said that the autostart brain is fine. They did get the car to start a couple times using the autostart but it was sporadic. Once the car is started it runs fine and stays running. any ideas or thoughts? ill try just about anything at this point.

If the engine is cranking fine but not firing up with the remote and ignition switch then you may have another problem such as abnormal fuel pressure caused by a flaky fuel pressure regulator or clogged fuel filter. Have you tried starting with shifter in either PARK or NEUTRAL just to rule out the transmisson range switch?

I would suspect the fuel pump resistor assembly.

If you turn the ignition on for a few seconds, then try and start it does it kick off a few times then die? If so that is probably your problem. You can verify this by bypassing the fuel pump high speed relay in the underhood fuse block.

Easy fix, parts are available anywhere.

I disagree. His symptoms since the car runs fine once he gets it started does not indicate a bad fuel pump resistor (FPR).

With a bad FPR the car will normally start and then the engine will die within a few to several seconds because the fuel pump hi-speed relay is not energized.

If you ever had that problem then you would know that.

Re: 98 GTP goofy ignition problem (help?)

we have a gtp 2000 in our shop thats doing the same thing, wont start sometimes but once it does its fine and runs great, it has good steady fuel pressure, but is not sparking or firing the injectors, we checked the crank sensor and its good and the ignition module was good and grounded good also, we belive it to be the wiring or the computer but are trying to confirm the problem as we speak.
