S/C Thunderbird vs BMW 525 Sport & 5.0 Mustang GT

My friend is driving around mommy's BMW 525 Sport around.. well let me back track a little.. My SC was previously running on 3cyl's. I replaced the plugs and wires, and now it runs like a top.

Anywho, I meet up with him afterwork, and casually say "You wanna run that Bavarian hunk of crap?" a chuckle comes out, with a "with [pointing to the sc] that piece of s***?" I reply "yeah." Keep in mind he still thinks its running like crap. Also keep in mind he calls my SC a POS everytime he sees it.

We cruise down the main highway and pace eachother for a while. I see him nail it and get the jump. I nail it without downshifting, and start to catch up on the top end. We both let up after he gets a carlength ahead. We all know these cars are great from a dig....

We go through a couple green lights, and decide to turn around. All lights are green... and we want a RED!

We sit infront of a 711 untill a car in cross traffic trips the the red light. We both pull onto the main road, and line up at the red light.

I rev to about 3000, and I can hear him powerbraking. Light chnages to green, and I slip the clutch with minimal wheel spin. We're completely even coming off the line, shift to second, and gain a nose. To third an entire 2 car lengths. By third I've made a bus length. Shift to 4th and keep it matted. By now I'm multiple bus lengths ahead, but I wanted to prove a point. By 110 hes almost unrecognizable as a BMW in my rear view mirror.

We turn around and meet up at the local gas station. I asked him when did he give up. Se said at around 90. At around 90, I was still way ahead of him...

Second race...

Lets see if this makes sense. I have a friend (who is a co-worker), who lives with my other friend who has a step brother who has a 94-95 5.0L GT 5-Speed. Anywho, he talks much-o-shit. After I took my co-worker friend home, I chill with my other friend and his step bro. I decide to head on my way home, and he decides to go to Advance Auto.

We both leave at the same time, with me in the lead. We get down a long straight road, and I slow down to about 30 in 1st gear. I watch him get over and attemp to pass me. I nail it, with him a fender ahead.. the SC kicks in. Ahhhh.... blower whine... Anywho I immediately stop the GT from pulling away, chirp second, and now we're completely dead even. by 3rd We're still pretty much even, and by 90 we both give up... with me maybe a few inches ahead... his car has an O/R H-Pipe and supposedly a mild cam..

Nice races. You talk as if your supercharger gives you a far superior top end as oppose to bottome end. I thought it would have been the other way around.

1) Like SL3000gt said, shouldn't it be the other way around?

2) Whats with all of these people picking on smaller engined BMWs?

3) Just curious, what year/generation 5-series was the bimmer?

superchargers do give a good top end. They just usually give a good bottom end as well.

Re: S/C Thunderbird vs BMW 525 Sport & 5.0 Mustang GT

WHen I am getting on my GTP it is fairly strong off the line, but when it hits about 30-40 at full boost it pulls and pulls. Not to sound like a punk, but I have been taking it kinda easy on it since its alot faster than my Jeep and just not used to it yet...

anyways nice races...I too would like to no what year the 5 series was....

I've noticed that alot as well. Everyone is like...I beat a 318 or a 325, or a 525. You never see them go up against 330ci ZHPs or M3s/M5s or the 6s or anything like that.

Anyways, nice race.

It could be because the lower end Bimmers are more common, younger people tend to own them more often and younger people tend to race more often, and because M3's are a push over ( ).

+1

Its either a 94 or 95. Anyways, he just figured out how to get it out of economy mode, and into M mode (or something like that) and he thought he was the shit.

Yah, the SC makes 315 tq at 2800, so it makes quite a bit down low tq. Downside is she gets major wheel hop (and will start to break shit) in the lower range, so I take full advantage of the top end, where it makes nearly 14psi of boost.

lol it's still sporting the 2.73's though... that car would really wake up with a set of 3.55s and still maintain some of it's highway cruising abilities.

Re: S/C Thunderbird vs BMW 525 Sport & 5.0 Mustang GT

I gotta agree with Matt, you need some gear in that car. I'd also say that 3.55 gearing would be your best option.

In any event good races. I'm not at all surprised by your win over the 525. You've got 230hp/300tq as I recall in your S/C'ed T-Bird, and even though your car is heavy the 525 is also a pig, but with a severely underpowered engine.

Oh, and the main reason people probably don't post kills on M3's/M5's is cause people raise the BS flag, even when there cars are pumping out more horsepower. I'd snarf an M3 in a heartbeat, but i'd make sure to get it on video to make sure I prove my point

M3's are becoming like Supras, they NEVAR LOSE unless they are not running right that day. Heck it's written in the owner's manual

Haha you got that right about the M3's. Even though my buddies 98 Z28 just wasted a supercharged E36 the other day haha.

haha, from the factory, it makes 210 (or 215.. w/e its only 5hp..) and 315tq. (does anyone else think 315tq from a 3.8 V6 is pretty amazing? Considering the 5.0 from the same era made... 280tq? or am I wrong?)

Its funny tho.. my bolt on 4.6 couldnt keep up with his 525... from a DIG or a ROLL. (3.08's) But on the top end I'd always catch him..

Ooops, my bad. I believe the 5.0 Mustangs from that era had 300 ft. lbs. of torque and 225hp. Then again supposedly Ford screwed up the numbers on the actual output, so it was more like 215hp/290tq. Dunno for sure though.

For what it is the 525 ain't all that bad i'd guess. The new 530's seem to put down some decent numbers.

Anyone know if the 5 series is getting the 3.0 liter twin turbocharged motor used in the 330i?

I assume you mean the 335, but I don't know. It most likely won't though.
