Re: Problem with petrol tank level indicator

I have a 99 Venture with the same problem. The fuel sending unit is part of the fuel pump assembly on mine, so we're just tracking our gas used/mileage using the trip odometer until we need a new fuel pump. The new fuel pump assembly costs US $350, PLUS labor!

This thread helped me diagnose mine, it was the sender in the tank. The metal wiper arms on the float arm were just plain worn out.

Re: Problem with petrol tank level indicator

My wife's 02 Venture just got out of the shop last friday for the same thing.
Too bad I wasnt able to convince her to just track her mileage since her last fill up. Half the cars ive ever owned aint had a working gas gauge..
But she is a nazi about running down to the very last drops of vapor in her tank, every time.
*sigh*

Re: Problem with petrol tank level indicator

Inexpensive fix to fixing Venture/ Silhouette/ Montana fuel tank senders:
(I've done it at least 5 times, has worked every time!)

#1. Remove fuel pump assy
#2. Remove fuel guage & float assy from pump. Note, the float just unsnaps.
#3. clip the 2 lead wires (so they can be re-soldered back in place)
#4. Decide what type of sender you have:
A: Black in color
B: White in color
(this is the only two sender styles i've seen in the ones I've replaced. --the two colors Do Not interchange)
#5. Take a drive to the salvage yard. (I recommend asking for the guy who warehouses the parts, not the counter guy.)
#6. Ask him to match up the sender (not the whole pump assembly.--many, many different GM pump assemblies use the same senders. If you're lucky, they will sell you just the sender.)
#7. VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure the sender has "curls" on the slide end of the contact points. They should look like the letter "J" at the end, not just straight. Your worn out sender has ones that are straight (because the curl portion has worn out)
#8. snap the replacement sensor back into your fuel pump assy, solder & heat shrink the wires.
#9. replace the original float on the sensor.
#10. test outside the vehicle to make sure sensor is working properly
#11. re-install pump

NOTE: the sensor is not available by itself from GM. (or aftermarket that I've found). If you find a used sensor, or a complete pump with the same sensor you probably will spend $75.00 or less. This is much better than about $300 for a new fuel pump assy.

Good Luck.
