Can coolant/oil channels be machined into a block or must they be cast along with it?

TIA

Oil and colant channels are already drilled in the block. I'm guessing you want to modify them. you can drill them out bigger it's a task. most will drill out the oil ports then tap and insert orfices at the main and cam to assure all the bearings get even oil. if you have looked at a damaged engine you'll see that the main farthest away from the pump is the first to go. unless you are going for all out you don't need to fool with any of it.

Oh, so the channels aren't present in the block after the casting?

Off the top of my head, I can't come up with a block material into which one couldn't drill oil passages.

When I said "depends on the block," I was referring to the fact that not all oil passages are machined. In some engines, there are cast-in oil passages in the block.

you can drill the blocks. Look at a LS/Vtec setup on a honda. Before the Vtec head can be put the block has to be drilled for a main oil line.
