Should oil pump be replaced along with oil pan?
1996 Crown Victoria LX, 138,00 miles.
My oil pan suddenly started to leak and it looks like a 1 inch square chunk is going to fall out of the side, the way it is leaking. It is in the shop with a pan on order now. Should I have the oil pump replaced at the same time? For the last year, when I start it I sometimes hear from 2 to 7 "knocks" that are not very loud, before the oil gage jumps up. I have been told that many 4.6's do this Ford wanted $900 to change the pan, the shop doing it is $300. Thanks |

Check what made the hole in the pan before you do anything else. Like maybe a connecting rod.

Re: Should oil pump be replaced along with oil pan?
Oops, sorry I forgot to mention that the oil pan was all rusted out on that side and the oil was seeping thru the rust in a square outline. I have never had an oil pan rust out before. The idea of replacing the oil pump was just to have it done while it was in the shop- If I had a garage to work in where I could take my time I would have done the oil pan myself, I just didn't feel like tackling it.
Today they called and said they messed up on the estimate. It will be $500 instead of $300. Wheel7 |

Re: Should oil pump be replaced along with oil pan?
To replace the pump I think you have to remove the timing cover(its directly driven by crank) are they doing this as well? If they are might as well have one put in there. I have heard it once on a Grand Marquis, manager said to replace pump, was still under warranty which doesn't pay shit so I didn't really want to do it(didn't really believed it would fix it either) but after it was in there owner never heard that rattle noise on start up again.
