odometer/gear selection light
2001 Regal - just purchased a couple of months ago for my daughter and got into drive it and noticed that the odometer and gear selection section is not lighting up.
Wondering if there is a fix for this other than replacing the entire instrument cluster (how hard is the cluster to get at?) Hopefully this won't be a cluster .... any help would be appreciated Duane |

Re: odometer/gear selection light
No fix that I know of. Normally it requires replacement of the complete IP cluster. You will have to remove the dash bezel, then the cluster will be easy to remove.

Re: odometer/gear selection light - update
Here's the update and I hope I'm not going to get screwed on this one.
We got an 6mo/6k warranty with this used car - called the warranty people and they said they need an odometer reading before they will even discuss this with me - "HEY are you listening to me"? I tell them - "that is what isn't working." - even then it doesn't sound like they are going to cover it.So.... does any one know where this information is stored? Seems it should be stored off the cluster somewhere - if I get a replacement cluster from a junk yard will I get my old mileage back or will I inheret the mileage from the salvaged auto. I'd hate to have something major happen and not be able to collect from these bozos! Gheez this is fun.... Any help would be appreciated Duane |

Re: odometer/gear selection light - update
Found a used cluster ($75.00) - Still would like to know since it's a digital readout if when they are changed I would get my true odometer reading (96K) instead of inheriting the new one (17K).
Also if there is any factory safeguards that would have to be overridden if the cluster is removed. Once again - any help is greatly appreciated Duane |

Re: odometer/gear selection light - update
I'm quite sure the odometer settings contained within the replacement IP will be your new mileage. A GM dealer should have the capability to program the module within the IP and give you the supporting paperwork as to what happened for vehicle historical and registration purposes. Also, there is a company that will program your original odometer setting known before the failure.
The only precaution on any electrical/electronic component is to make sure no power is applied. Ignition to off and disconnect the battery negative cable. BTW - The dealers that can't do anything about programming the IP may send it out too. There is a company called Southern Electronics is at 1-800-572-2880.
