97 GP runs for a rew seconds then shuts down

Hello everyone, I had the same problem last year. I had the CPS replaced to no avail, then either the ICM or the ECM replaced and the car was fine. I can't remember which one. I had to release the radio afterwards thru the 800 number and other info I received here. Looking to do it myself this time. Any help??

Thanks for your time.

It would be helpful to post what model GP and engine size plus mileage.

Do you recall any of those old posts where you had the problem? What were the details?

Thanks. Sorry for the lack of info. I have a 97 GP GT with the 3800 non-supercharged with 100K on it.

I'll recheck the old posts.

No problem. Yeah, I checked some of your old posts. Something about an anti-theft BCM code related to Passkey II? The problem is your year model GP does not have Passkey. The 97 GPs basically have a content anti-theft system and technically it is not classified as Passkey or Passlock. Was the fault code issue ever resolved?

Re: 97 GP runs for a rew seconds then shuts down

Hey, once the mechanic replaced the module, everything was fine, no codes thrown. He did the CPS first at my request, then had a locksmith check out the ignition. I ran the VIN as well. I think its the same issue as last time, it does the same thing. I'm just not sure which module he replaced.

It would have to be the body control module (BCM) since that is the brain of the VATS system. The PCM is a possibility but the signal to enable fuel injectors originates at the BCM module. Are you getting any SECURITY light?

Re: 97 GP runs for a rew seconds then shuts down

Hey guys, the only security light that I see is on the radio. It flashes when the keys are out of the ignition and when they are in and in the off position. When I turn the keys, all the relays initialize and the fuel pump runs. It starts for a few seconds, then shuts down. Same as the last time.

Thanks for the help

Re: 97 GP runs for a rew seconds then shuts down

When it shuts down does it start up right away? Do you recall which module was replaced that corrected the problem before?

If it is the VATS anti-theft the BCM will send a disable command to the PCM module which will in turn disable the fuel injector pulse to all fuel injectors.

Can you recap what has been replaced or action taken to date?

Re: 97 GP runs for a rew seconds then shuts down

Hey Guys, Thanks for the help so far. I spoke to the mechanic and doesn't remember which module he replaced. He closed the shop also so no records.

When I turn it over, it starts up like normal, then dies. If I immediatley try again, it just turns over. if I wait about 5 seconds, it starts and dies.

I haven't done anything yet, time permitting tomorrow. Kinda don't know where to start.

I remember he said he used a used part because the new on was 500.00 or so, possibly a dealer item only. Not sure though.

Re: 97 GP runs for a rew seconds then shuts down

Hey guys, THANKS for all the help. I found a BCD from getusedparts.com and that cured it. It took a while to get the part, but your diag was the fix. Again, I really appreciate the help. You are the best!!!!

Thanks!
