Don't think about speeding in NY

and get caught by the State Police. As of September 1, they are no longer accepting plea deals on speeding tickets. Either pay the fine and take the points, or go to trial. http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?n...id=74969&rfi=6

Stupid police. They just sit there, wasting gas, waiting for someone to tag. Stupid police.

Plus a majority of them (in my experience) treat kids my age like shit.

P.S. I have a few NYPD officers in the family. Just so you don't think I'm some jerk who thinks all cops are terrible humans. Just some of them, but it seems to be more than just some.

Re: Don't think about speeding in NY

i think this is a good move as it means that the rules are now laid out clearly and there is no place for discretion (upon being pulled for speeding - whether you get pulled is still a different matter) on the officer's part.

it also reduces some of the burden on the officers as their actions are now dictated by rule and not up to them. They have a tough enough job already, especially in a big metropolitan and populated place like NY without having to deal with whiney kids trying to get off a speeding ticket.

If you have cops in your family, then you probably already know that with that attitude, you will get treated like shit. In my experience you get treated the same way you treat the cop that pulls you over.

Blaming this occurrence on the police is misplaced. The legislature passed the law, and nothing on the road changes - if you speed, you get a ticket.

The difference occurs in court. Either you plead guilty or go to trial - which, IMO puts the judgement back to the judge, rather than the prosecutor and makes sense from that point of view.

UPDATE: I also have read in another article online where a NY lawmaker is planning to introduce new legislation to overturn the new policy http://www.thedailystar.com/news/sto...06/21/mm7.html I guess all the lawyers got nervous that their business would decrease because of the new law .

Re: Don't think about speeding in NY

HondaDylan, bashing cops in this section is not permitted. That's all there is to it. They are doing a job, and while there good and bad ones, calling them stupid, or any other insulting phrase doesn't do an ounce of good in here. So please don't do it again.

97, interesting read, thanks for bringing this up, because I hadn't heard anything and spend quite a bit of time speeding through NY interstates...quite literally. I personally think this will do more good than bad to everyone involved. Cops lose overtime, we lose advanced opp. to plea bargain, courts will be more crowded, lawyers will lose easy money...but what can you do. Hopefully it is overturned

Re: Don't think about speeding in NY

Good advice. It took me two tickets to finally learn the lesson- do not speed in NY. Cops are ev-ery-where, you will get caught. And now you can't even plea.

Re: Don't think about speeding in NY

I'm thinking they are counting on more people just paying the fine.

Re: Don't think about speeding in NY

Just curious, did that bill pass? Are there plea-bargains now?
