Multiple Problems on 99 Grand Prix GT, Wiper/Horn/Lights/Door
So, I'm having tons of problems, and if someone could please help me, it would be greatly appreciated.
First off, the wipers don't stop where they should, on the mist settings, they go up/down/up/ then freeze in the middle of the window for a few seconds, then go down. Also on ANY delay setting they go up and get stucks, but they work fine on low or high. Now the horn, just doesn't work at all. Also, just one light is out on the dash, for my climate control on the driver side. And, my passenger door won't open, which I've determined to be the actuator, so I bought that part already. Anyone think the rest could possibly be a fuse, or a little more work possibly needed? Gas mileage got really bad suddenly too, as well as my oil life being a 98% and my low oil light coming on? HELP!?!

For oil life reading 98% doesn't mean there is a problem. When reset after an oil change it reads 100%. For a DIC with Trip Computer to reset do the following: On DIC press MODE until the light next to OIL LIFE lights Press and hold RESET for 3 seconds until it reads 100% For low oil check the engine oil level. If good then it may be the oil level sensor located on the oil pan or wiring. Welcome to AF.

Thanks, I'll check on all that, and let ya know.
Also, still wondering about the wiper blades. The door locks won't open manually or via RKE. And my little baby has 98k on it. |

With 98K miles a basic tune up is a good starting point. Does wonders for the fuel economy. Note: Use AC Delco spark plugs and ignition wires only.
On the wiper problem yours is different from what we are used to. Normally the wipers do not go to park and stay straight up in any mode. But 97 - 98 GPs do have problems with a metal tab at the wiper motor assembly that it uses for positioning so check that out. The wiper blades and cowling must be removed to acesss. On the door locks I would recommend removing the door panel and using a 12 volt test lamp or multimeter troubleshhot the problem before deciding it is the actuator although it is a possibility. Another common problem is the body control module (BCM) which will cause door lock/unlock problems via manual or RKE. Other than that I guess we have it covered. Keep us posted. Good luck.

Re: Multiple Problems on 99 Grand Prix GT, Wiper/Horn/Lights/Door
Alright, well I checked the fuses for the horn, everything there was alright, my stupid OHM meter isn't working anymore, so I have to go get a new one of those, but the horn STILL isn't working. Hmph.
Maybe the relay? I wasn't about to spend $40.00 on one before knowing that was it. Oil's fine now, changed that out, my spark plugs and cables are really clean, so I'd have to say they don't need to be changed. And now I still haven't been able to pin-point the wiper problem, I thought possibly the timing was off and needed to be re-adjusted, but I'm trying to take each thing one step at a time. So right now is just the horn and the door, once those are fixed, then I'll worry about the wipers, since they are still useable. Also by chance, do you know if its a fuse thats making my Climate Control light on the driver side not work? |

If the fuse for climate control was out you would not have any HVAC. The lighting control comes from the IP dimmer. There are special mini-lamps that may burn out in the Climate Control unit. It would require removal of the head unit to replace them. It is a solder job and tedious. Good luck.

Re: Multiple Problems on 99 Grand Prix GT, Wiper/Horn/Lights/Door
Well, stroke of magic today, my door started working.
Hit the unlock button a few times on the RKE and it popped open. So now I'm assuming something is just loose in the door, and hopefully its something easy, thats for Monday though. Haven't been able to figure out the horn or wipers yet either. And any good ideas to fix rust on the window frame on the door (the black part) I have some surface rust there I'd like to get rid of, just a few spots, and one tiny nick on the rear panel from a stone that rusted that I'd like to fix too. Suggestions? And weather stripping, its kinda torn around the top, easy to replace? |
