Service Engine Soon light after gas fill up

I filled up yesterday morning at a station I've bought gas at before, but not all that often, went a couple of miles to work, and then in the middle of my commute home last night, the SES light comes on.

Reading the manual, it says that it could be I put the gas cap on wrong so I took it off and put it on again last night after getting home. My wife then drove the car to the grocery later last night and I drove in to work again this morning, and the light is still on so far. The manual does say that "a few driving trips with the cap properly installed" should make the light go out.

It also says that bad gas is one possible reason this light might come on.

In this day and age I would think that all gas is pretty good. The manual says that it would tank at least one full tank of different gas to turn the light off. With how much I drive, to go through this whole tank and then another full tank will take a little more than a month. If it is something else wrong, would driving that much longer be detrimental to the car?

I did a search through the forums on here and found out from many of you that I should be able to take the car to AutoZone or some place like that and they will hook it up and get me the codes for free. I will do that, and report back what I find out.

yeah the SES light can be set by MANY things besides just the gas cap, im not sure why the owner's manual says that it will go away when you put the gas cap on right..cause thats not necessarily true.

Anyone that drives a car that needs high-octane knows that there is some skanky gas out there. The Intrigue 3.5L is one of the few general high performance cars that will run perfectly well on low octane. Cars like the Maxima, BMW etc will not. People that run on the strip will only go to certain gas stations that are reputable for having good gas. The real racers use race gas and/or mix their own to get the octane they need.

=You could have easily gotten into some crappy gas. The Intrigue is right on the edge of using low octane gas.

hello hey i had same problem in the intrigue what you want to do and its very cheap if you do it at autozone is get a new gas cap because if you look up my threads you'll see that if you take it to the stealership that they will charge you like 100 cause the blew smoke in my tank and found out that it was the gas cap

Check out the how many miles is on your intrigue and youll see mine there got 150000 on it now here is the thing and the price i told you i polled it from there so you dont have to hunt for it here you go "also had code said car was leaking gas or something cant remember hasd to spen 121 with tax for them to blow smoke it tank found out that the gas cap was bad"

Okay, I got the codes read today.

Funny thing is, on the way to AutoZone the car stalled and upon startup the Service Vehicle Soon light, the PCS light and the Trac Off light all came on in addition to the SES light. I got to Autozone and shut off the car and then turned it back on, and only the SES light came back on.

They read code P0410 twice (Secondary air injection system malfunction) and P1372 once. They said they didn't know what P1372 was and I had to take it to the dealer to find out.

Well, it looks like P1372, Crankshaft Position Sensor A-B Correlation is what it is, and is related to the stalling accorind to this article.http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m...4/ai_n15988809

Will now do some more searching on these codes.... Any thoughts?

I should add another pice of info, and I think this may be the problem.

When I got my oil changed the last time (yeah I know, Jlube sucks), maybe 2k miles ago by now, they told me that they couldn't check the air filter as something was "in the way" (I think they might have said the O2 sensor?) and they said something about possibly damaging it if they went to look at the air filter.

Yeah, I'm a dumbass and I let it go at the time. No one has ever said that to me before about the air filter in the 56k I've put on the car since I got it.

So I'm thinking either they messed it up somehow, or it got messed up the time before, when I got the oil changed.

Could this be the culprit?

I had the same problem with mine. Although I don't know what codes it pulled, I had to have the crank position sensor replaced.

How much did that set you back? Or did you replace it yourself?

Anyone think that the O2 sensor could be the problem for the P0410? Or at least is that a good place to start?

It cost about $300-350, I can't remember exactly. I do believe that I am savvy enough to have done the job, but opted to just pay someone to do the work. I did read on here about someone else who tackled the job themselves, and bought the part for about $60 from what I recall. I think the part is around the area of the starter. My symptoms were sudden stall, triggering the dash lights, or a firm buck of the engine, then triggering the lights. Clearly the lights went off when I shut off the key and the time they took to re-appear varied. Also from what I have read, this is not an uncommon problem.

After re-reading your post about the codes, I do remember that whole A-B Correlation thing, so I would be surprised if the crank postion sensor did not solve the problem.

Keep this in mind...I had 5 lights on:SVS, SES, ABS, PCS, and TRAC OFF. The crank sensor only solved one of those lights. Since then, I have found the root of the other lights....a speed sensor on the right front wheel was ripped loose and hanging on the ground. No wonder my ABS hasn't been working

It is a good starting point since both active and passive tests involving the air pump are centered around it. The Bank 1, Sensor 1 02 Sensor which is before the CAT convertor. Another possibility is the CAT convertor. I've seen that alot on NC8 LEV 3.5L (LX5) engines.

Well, I took it to an independent shop and they had it for two days and couldn't find anything wrong with the car. They said if it comes back on again that I might have to go to the dealer. After 180 miles or so it came back on again and I too kit to the dealer today and they called and said it's the air injection valve and solenoid They said it was stuck and everything was running rich. They are going to replace those parts, clean out all of the "gunk" and then retune the engine to specs (can you even "tune" these engines like you you can with older ones?) all for $725 or so to fix. I don't know how bad I'm being raped, but I don't have a good feeling.
