WIP: Tamiya '66 VW Karmann-Ghia

Well this is my first post here. I have been building models for 6 years off and on. This is my resent project. It's given me a lot of trouble right from the begining. When I bought it, it had had alot of excess plasic all over the body. When I got that off is when I moved. When I got back into doing this one I found that the roof was smashed due to the move. Fixed that and now I couldn't find the headlight backing. Now this is where I'm at now. I'm going for a modern rendition, with shaved side moldings and emblems.

My insperation. If someone could help me find some rims like that they could help me out alot.

Nice project - good luck with it!

BTW: split your photos up with an "enter" between them

you can get some prodrive wheels simialr to the ones pictured, except they're 6-spoke. they come in one of the Kei S15 kits from Aoshima.

Nice idea!

I've these rims. They came from the Lexus IS200 HKS Kansai kit from Fujimi.
Exactly the same rims!

Kris.

Re: WIP: Tamiya '66 VW Karmann-Ghia

My original plan was a pearlized purple with a white top. Even have the paint arleady. But now I'm considering going black. I wish I had the capabilities to do the headlight like the black one. Maybe if i had the stuff to do resin casting I could but for now I'm going to keep it just molded headlights.

Re: WIP: Tamiya '66 VW Karmann-Ghia

XS Tuning makes wheels exactly like that, and with an added bonus, they are made for american kits and are therefore kind of narrow, so you won't have to do much to fit them under that VW. You can see them here, as "RS Touring" wheels. Does anyone know if they are made my Accurate Miniatures, or what?

The model is cool, the inspiration is awesome. How close do you intend to come to it with your model?

Re: WIP: Tamiya '66 VW Karmann-Ghia

I'm probably not going to get too close to the insperation car since I don't know how to make clear parts (and don't have the money to learn). I am going to mold the headlights though. I kind of had to since I lost the original headlight backings and had to rig up a new set from spare parts.

Those do look alot like the rims. I going to buy them. Can't believe I'm going to spend the same amount on rims for this kit as I did to buy the full kit but oh well.

I finished up the body work. I'm going to hit it with some primer tomarrow and check for flaws. I'll get some pictures up to show my progress.

I know how you feel.
I still can't believe sometimes how many multiples of kit value goes into a model the second you want to add anything. And my friends think that modeling is a cheap hobby....

I wonder what the "world record high" is for a single aftermarket item...? Or the most "expensive" build...?

As I said though, good luck with this - it's a great project!
If you post the size of the clear parts you need, I'll have a look in my spares box. Maybe I'll have something you can use.

Re: WIP: Tamiya '66 VW Karmann-Ghia

I think SCALEMASTER takes the cake on most expensive kit, and he has yet to finish his super seven!!!! I bet for an individual to spend the amount of money in machine work that he has on that one car, that person could buy a house, or atleast a car!!!!! a damn NICE car at that!!!!

that ghia is a nice car. I'm guessing it's the tamiya kit? I built one, oob, with a few minor mods turned out spectacular. as for the headlights, look for a mercedes that has those lights (that's what they are). a friend in a local VW club showed me that car in a magazine some time ago, and I can't remember what specific model mercedes, but they are definitely mercedes. or you could get close to it with some porche lights, maybe.

black is beautiful!!! very hard to make it look right due to it's reflectiveness. I would stick to the purple/white scheme you had initially intended for better eye appeal. besides, if you put a black car on a contest table, it disappears.

i think that would have to be a Pocher F40 or something similar, the kit and superdetial conversion kit go up to something like $4,000 combined!

Re: WIP: Tamiya '66 VW Karmann-Ghia

Ok, maybe you guys can give me a tip on how to fill flaws in the putty work. this has been the 3rd primering/puttying since I did the work in the first picture and I still can't get the small airbubbles out.

Re: WIP: Tamiya '66 VW Karmann-Ghia

Well I'm pretty much finishing this model up. Just wondering if you guys think these rims would work with this model. I usually don't cheapen out on models but I have another model I'm going to start working on soon and I just want to get this one done and not have to wait for rims.

Possibly might paint them gunmetal or silver if they will.
