passlock

do i really have to install a new instrument panel cluster to fix my passlock problem? 96 buick skylark , the theft system light flashes, car will not start. if i leave key in on possition for ten min the light will stop flashing , car will start . is it the lock cylinder? what is my problem

Welcome to AF.

On Passlock VATS systems the key lock cylinder is the transponder device that sends the right signal to the theft deterrent system so the vehicle will start. So the lock cylinder is a possibility.

This is a "Dumb Guy" question, but wouldn't a '96 have a PASSKey system, not a PassLock?

There is no dumb question. As you already know if it is a Passkey I/II it will have the resistor pellet on the key. However, I believe the '96 Buick Syklark models have Passlock I, therefore no resistor pellet.

Also, this problem may be the IP cluster since a module for Passlock is located there.

yeah there is no resistor pellet
i may have fixed the problem!
or so it seems for the time being
i sprayed carb cleaner in my lock cylinder
my car has started since , today is day 5
about 25 times it has turned over with no waiting period
