The carpet itsself is very easy to remove, it's getting all the stuff that gets in the wat out that takes time. Seats, center console, side moldings, seat belts and anything else you see that would get in the way. After all that is out, there may be a few clips, but other than that, it just pulls out.

Re: new carpet in a 89 hatch

With most aftermarket carpet kits like Auto Custom Carpets, you'll need to cut the holes for the bolts, e-brake, etc. Save the OEM carpet and use it as a pattern. But don't do cutting until you've kinda done a test fit. I used to work at an uphostery shop and have put carpet in before. If you've never done it before, it could take awhile, like 5-7 hours to put an aftermarket one in, start to finish. You could go quicker if you're a quick learner. You'll probably need to re-attatch the carpet to the door sill plates if the oem one was attatched. Nothing super hard. I seriously f-'d up my first carpet install back in the day, but was able to get it so no one could really tell by the time I was done. I say go for it.
