Question a/c hissing

I have a 2002 Intrigue GL. While driving I hear an occasional hissing sound coming from the dash area by the steering wheel. It isn't a consistent hiss, more like a pulsing hiss that will last for several minutes. When I turn the a/c off it will go away. I've had it at the dealership & they said it was actuators. I understand that when you first turn on the a/c but not when the a/c has been on for a while. Any one else experieced this?

Re: a/c hissing

There are various vacuum/electrical actuators and temperature actuator(s). Is that sound hissing like a vacuum leak or a motor type whirring sound?

I don't know if it is normal to get those sounds for that long of a period of time but it is not uncommon to hear the temperature actuator(s). They will adjust and move depending on where the temperature is set on the climate control system. Dual climate control systems may be a little noisier because there are two temperature actuators. One (driver's) left of the dash center area and one right for the passenger side.

As Bnaylor says a lot of controls on it.
Does air flow change or vent temptures when it dooes it?
Also sometimes you may hear coolant flowing threw heater core.
Make sure there is no air in coolant syatem and make sure it is full.
Also low on freon will sometimes make the act up.
Did the dealership check for proper freon charge?
There is A TSB on the replacement of a revised defrost actuator.
02-01-38-001 replacement procedure.
I do not have any info on why or what it is about.
You might want to check it out with the dealer.
It may be some of your hissing noise.
Also here is a good ac link.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

Re: a/c hissing

Thanks for the advice. The temp and air flow seem to be unaffected. I need to get it in for an oil change & I'll have them check it out again. I'll let you know what I find out. Need to get it in before it is out of warranty!
