Private schools
So, that resurrected thread got me wondering how many people here actually go to private schools, or have gone to.
I did, Grenville Christian College. It's a boarding school with crappy food, awsome education, and sort of ok dorm life. I enjoyed my 4 ears there, I made some good friends, had some good times, and got a much better education than i could have had at any public school i've seen. Also, is there a drug "problem" at your schools. I've heard that alot of private schools have big drug problems. Mine wasn't that bad. basicly everyone in grade 11 and 12 smoked weed and many of the grade 10's and 9's did. A few people did it at school but were smart enough not to get caught. A friend of mine smoked up at least twice a day at school, which might not seem like alot to some people but my school is fairly busy so it's hard to find the time. We once hotboxed a girls bathroom on the last night at school, we didn't get caught because we weren't stupid, only stupid people get caught. My school only had 250-300 people from kindergarden (4 or 5 year olds) to grade 12. so we had small classes. my graduating class was the biggest class in the school, we were ~35 people.

Re: Private schools
I went to the in-between, a Diocese owned school.
Didn't really have a drug problem there, but the education was definitely awesome.

Re: Private schools
Always gone to public, co-ed schools.
Good size drug problem at my last high school. Not so much at the one I went to in SA though (although I was only 8th grade so I didn't know shit)

Re: Private schools
Went to catholic school 3rd-8th grade.
There were 6 people in my 8th grade class. We didn't know what drugs were. High school was a culture shock what I gained in pure education benefits from the private school was probably more than negated by the sociological problems. |

Re: Private schools
I went to the same public school system from Kindergarten to HS Graduation. We had a decent-sized drug problem. In grades 9-12 there were about 1000 people, to give an idea about how big the school was. The administration wouldn't admit to having a drug problem, but we did have a drug-sniffing dog in the school on a routine basis. Most of it was weed, but not too many people brought it with them. It was a rich community, so there were some higher-end drugs, but alcohol was a bigger problem, IIRC.

Re: Private schools
I went to public schools, but after all the issues I had there my parents sent my brother to Marmion Academy, which is a very very good private school and also Military based.

Re: Private schools
I must say, the military based schools seem to be the best. you usually get a good education, you don't have all of the social problems that you ahve at most of the private schools i've seen, it keeps the kids fit, and it keeps them disciplined. that's the biggest problem with my old school, some people would get away with murder where others would get screwed for everything. also, if you had a bit of common sense, you could get around the rules pretty easily. i mean, we're supposed to sign out before going off campus. i did it maybe 5 times the entire year, and went out almost once a week. it was stuff like that that you should get caught for but didn't/

Re: Private schools
Drug problems are common. I just graduated from a school of 2500 and we had a huge drug problem there. I'd say 65% (if not more) of the school did drugs, had drugs on campus, or even used them on campus.

Education comparison was hard to say I think it was worse in the catholic school as far as the level of education I got, nuns taught everything, I always got B's and C's in catholic school but did much better in public after I caught up. Seemed to me catholic school had old out of date books/information compared to public but I started in 5th grade and things obviously got more complicated from the lower grades to the higher ones. Ditto on the culture shock on entering public school 'welcome to the jungle' seems appropriate after I discovered music, drugs, sex etc. ![]() As far as community college vs 'regular' colleges I had the unfortunate experience of going to two community colleges for a semester, long story, and both were significantly worse in comparison to my regular college. The classes/material in those community colleges covered about half of what a course in my regular college would have covered in the same time. |
