problem with clutch
ok hears the deal i have a 69 firebird that hasent run in about 6 years, so i started to prep it to run again with a buddy of mine and got to the point of manualy turning the crank with a breaer bar so i tell me buddy to turn it as soon as i put it in gear but he jumps the gun and turns in while its still in reverse and we hear a loud POP. now i can shift to all 4 gears without engaging the clutch pedel, also when i shifted from first to second it made a poping noise as well, now i only did it once for fear of further damage, but i can also shift smothly while clutch pedel is pressed. any ideas as to what may have broken would be great help. i have not got under the car yet to check all the linkage.
p.s. the noise sounded external and not from inside the clutch housing nor the trans. thanks. |

Re: problem with clutch
I've had plenty of manuals transmissions like T-10s and M-22s which could be shifted without the clutch depressed (engine off). If you cna shift with teh engine running, you've either lost the linkage at the side cover or have blown a shift fork.
