How does your power steering feel?

Mine works fine in all, but I can feel some vibration when the speed is high. Is that normal to Camaro, or I need to service the power steering?

Re: How does your power steering feel?

look more to your tire balance and wheel alignment.

Re: How does your power steering feel?

Thanks for the replies!

Mine is 96 RS. 100K. I just have the tire changed, so the balance should be good. I do not know if Tires Plus check the alignment though.

Can you give me more detail about the rag joint?

Usually tire places charge extra for an alignment, so unless you requested it or if it's on your receipt, odds are they didnt.

Rag joint is the hard rubber used on pre 98 steering linkages and with time and heat exposure can stretch and crack or even rip. Which causes alot of play in the steering (a real loose feel) and can lead to you have to keep the wheel in another position besides the 12 O'clock to keep the vehicle straight but the other suggestions are very likely as well.

Re: How does your power steering feel?

Wright's got the right idea with checking all the simple things that could cause a vibration, make sure you do that before going after the more complicated stuff.

You've probably already checked, but make sure your tire pressure is where it should be on all four tires.

Re: How does your power steering feel?

Hi guys,

thanks for your reply.

I checked the tire pressure, just did a balance for all of the wheels. But the problem still exists. The car begins to vibrate when the speed is above 50 MPH. I can feel obvious vibrating from the steering wheel.

I tested the drive shaft by downshifting, it seems that drive shaft is good too (When I revivied the shaft at low gear, the car was smoothy). I pushed the left front and right front, the springs also works fine.

Really confused.

Re: How does your power steering feel?

I think your drive shaft might be out of balance. How fast your driveshaft moves depends on how fast the rear tires are spinning, not how fast the engine is spinning. That was a good idea to downshift to try to narrow down the problem, you just had it a little backwards. If you get a vibration at a certain RPM than it's engine/trans related, if you get a vibration at a certain speed it suspension/chasis related. So if you got up to speed and down shifted, the drive shaft would be spinning the same rate as if you were in overdrive. Hope this helps and good luck with finding the problem!

Re: How does your power steering feel?

Thanks for your reply. I think you are right. When I downshifted, the spin of the drive shaft also slowed down. Because the shaft is connected to the transmission instead of the engine. It only shows the vibration is not from the engine.

BTW, I heard that chevy dealers cure vibration by replacing the drive shaft with an aluminum one. Does anyone know if a one piece aluminum drive shaft will fit my 2-piece drive shaft (mine is a V6 3.8 L).

Yes it will fit in perfectly and also help eliminate some weight from the drivetrain which will help performance wise. If you look in our classified section a member is actually even selling a Aluminium driveshaft at a very good price.

Re: How does your power steering feel?

Hi F1,

Thanks. I did not find the shaft you mentioned.

BTW, are all of the shafts the same in length. I found that some people are selling Camaro driveshaft. They all said they fit 82-02 Camaro, however, the length was 44 inch from one of the seller and 41 inch from the other.
