Question Advice, help, answers....

Well, I don't know much about car audio. Like, basically nothing. However, I just bought a CD deck to replace the aftermarket tape deck in my car and kind of want to install it myself to save the 70 bucks in installation. I think that if it were only the deck I could do it...but I also have some speakers to put in the back dash. So, how do I go about doing it? The new deck is 4 channel, 50W, and the stock speakers are only in the doors. So, I'll now have a total of 4 speakers. So, do I basically just need to connect the deck to a power source and run wires to each speaker (4 channels, 4 speakers)?

Also, a friend told me that if the speakers are rated at a higher wattage than the deck that I can blow the deck if I don't get an amp. Is that true? I think the speakers are rated at 90W, but I'm not completely sure. They're just some 4 1/2"s, so I thought I'd be okay without an amp.

Well, ANY help or advice is apprectiated, considering I'm a big idiot when it comes to car audio. Thanks.

Enzo,

Make sure you purchase the adaptor harness for you vehicle. It will make life easy by plugging into the stock radio harness. Install your two new rear speakers, and run the wires up to the new head unit. The schematic on the head unit, or in the box it came with will show you what wires off of your head unit are for the rears. Pay attention to + and - on the speakers and on the head unit. Try not to get them mixed up. You won't blow anything if you mix them, but sound quality can suffer.

Your head unit has a recommended ohm rating for the speakers (generally 8 ohms). Try and stay with the recomended ohm rating when choosing speakers. Do not install 2 ohm speakers in a system designed for 8 ohms. You can put the head unit into thermal protection by doing this, and eventually destroy the head unit. If you install an amp. make sure you don't drop below the ohm rating for it either. As far as putting 200 watt speakers up to a head unit that only puts out 45 watts per channel, you will not get the full potential out of the speaker, but provided the ohm ratings for the speaker and head unit match, you will not cause damage to the head unit.
