96 tercel idling high

my 96 toyota tercel started idling high and every time i rev it i hear a little back fire. i check my vacum hoses and throttle cable and they are still good. could it be my timing?

I don't think you can have much of an effect on ignition timing. Check your ECT sensor. Your ECM may think your engine is cold when it's not.

almost sounds like a intake leak. Do this your intake needs cleaned any ways so. Take you intake maniflow off(the tube runners) and clean the hell out of them with carb and choke cleaner they will be gumed up like all hell. And do the same to the throttle body also. Put a new intake manifold gasket on, bolt it all up and see what it does. IF that is not it, it needs it any ways that can give ypu up to a 15hp increase and better gas milage. makes it idle alot better also.
