Service vehicle light on
I have Service Vehicle Soon light on in my 2000 Alero for no good reason. It has been on for over a year. Maintenence is all up, standard code readers make no sense of it and there is no method in the owner's manual or in Haynes manual to reset it. The Olds dealer thought maybe it was a computer glitch and Offered to replace the computer $350. A more reliable mechanic couldn't make sense of it either. It passes California smog test OK. Isn't there a law that says that vehicle information must be public after a certain time? this is not Service Engine light, but the Service Vehicle Soon light. What does it mean? Is there a recall for it? Can it be reset? There must be others out there that have had this problem.

Re: Service vehicle light on
The SVS light - Service Vehicle Soon indicates a fault with the safety systems of the vehicle and should give off an annoying chime if there is an actual failure. On an Alero a few things that can give a SVS light are Daytime Running Lights (DRL) (possible defective DRL module) and/or the auto headlight system/light control malfunctioning. Sometimes a burned out headlamp or brake lights may give a SVS but I've never seen that happen on an Alero but you never know. When you replace the defective part the light should extinguish.
Even a bad hub bearing/wheel sensor can give a SVS light but it is normally accompanied by an ABS and Trac off light. Are the DRL and auto headlamps working properly?

Re: Service vehicle light on
Hey guys,
I've got the same SVS light on in my '99. It is on due to some sort of problem with the automatic light system. Since the light came on I have had to turn on my lights manually, the headlights seem to come on fine by themselves but my dash lights and tail-lights do not come on automatically. Does anyone now anything about this, how to go about fixing it, or if it's really worth caring about at all? |
