which header to get?
I have a 99 civic dx hatch with an AEM cai and a Greddy SP exhaust. I want to complete the breathing by adding a header. I was wondering how much gain will I get by adding the header. Any suggestions on what brand to get? Neuspeed? DC Sports? Another question is whether to get ceramic or stainless steel??

stainless steel will be the better of the two. sure it changes color due to the extreme heat of the eshaust gasses. but it will hold up better than a ceramic coated unit. ceramic coated units are typically a cheaper steal coated with the ceramic and have a tendency to rust and crack at the welds. i feel you will be happier with a stainless unit. unless money is a major issue.
as for brand. they are all about the same. DC is an exellent unit. there is a new one, not sure of the brand the name has slipped my mind. it has been in the last few issues of turbo magazine....or maybe its import tuner.....which ever one has "power pages" they tested it on a 5th gen civic hatch and made impressive numbers on a tired motor. the next question is whether you want tri-y (4-2-1) or a 4-1 unit. they both make power differently. i forget which gives power in what range. someone who knows more will have to share that information

The 4-2-1 header is designed to make mid-range torque. The 4-1 header is designed to make power in the high rpm range, like 5000 rpm on up. On a internally stock motor like yours, you are better off to go with the 4-2-1. If you went with the 4-1 you would actually lose low end torque and the gains wouldnt start until your car was almost tached out.
Get the 4-2-1. And neuspeed makes good headers too. I would go with either neuspeed or DC.

Does Neuspeed make a header for me? I have a 1999 civic dx (d16y7). I am having trouble finding a listing for a neuspeed header for my car. Do they even make one for me? Also, dc sports only makes a 4-1 header for my car, so that means I would actually lose some of the low and mid range power right? Dang, not having an Ex is a real pain. Does anyone else make a good header for my car? Thanks for all the helpful info.

Ok, I was searching and found it on import tuner. Turns out that Landspeed Racing and HP Racing Motorsports makes a good header. I checked and saw that Landspeed Racing makes a stainless steel 4-2-1 for my 99 hatch, but HP Racing makes a stainless steel 4-2-1 for 96-98. Question: Will the HP Racing header for 96-98 civic fit my 99 dx? The import tuner page listed the HP Racing header yielding more gains and it's cheaper than the Landspeed one too! Anyone have one of these headers one their car? Any experiences or opinions?? Thanks to everyone and white97ex!

get a jackson racing header or something similar. if you notice, and i know, DC is a good brand, but if you notice, it doesn't extend very far off the block and then BAM!, an instant 90 degree bend that your shoving your exhaust through, which a jackson extend a little further off the block , then has a gradual bend. think of it this way, would something move faster if it is moving in gradual bends? or if its slamming itself into the wall before it begins to bend? just a thought...

i read on a site that when installing new headers, they said to first drain the oil... do you really have to? cause i was gonna install headers soon, but i dont know how to change my oil ... never wanted to deal with it, so i always paid someone.

well i guess ill try it sooner than later since i have a change due soon.
on a side note, im frustrated as hell. i got my header today, but i cant install it for a couple months cause i have to wait until after i get smogged. and i cant do that until i get the papers sent from the dmv. the header i bought isnt carb exempt, and if i put them on now, id have to change them back to stock for testing, and then put the new set back after that. im not worried about the work involved, but i would have to buy 2 more sets of gaskets. and i dont wanna spend another $70.

ahhh....that sucks. What kind of header did you get? Was it a lot cheaper then the DC cuz it probably would've saved you the hassle and you could've put it on rite now. Probably get good power from it too.........

DC Sport Ceramic are just as fine as any other and the price is great! Headers usually give you 6-8 HP depending on your setup!
