1989 240sx Project
I recently bought a 240sx off a friend and have no clue as to what to do with it. What's the deal with engines? What can I put in here? What's the difference in the motors? What's a sr20det or a ka24???? help!!!! I have a 2400 sohc 12valve motor that came with it. I think it's form a 94 240sx. Is that a good motor? Will it fit in the 89? Are there any v6's I can put in there, like a nissan 3000 form a 300z? Feel free to spill a lot of info if you got it to share. Thanks. :smoker2:

ka24de is the dual overhead cam (de) engine from the 240's i think they started stuffing them in 240's in 90 or 91 and the ka24e is the single overhead cam (e) and the sr20det is the sylvia engine's from japan

Re: 1989 240sx Project
Quote:
- You can put a variety of different engines in your 240 such as the SR20DET. You could also put in the CA18DET which isn't as popular as the SR but still a very potent motor. Also if you have enough cash then you can put in an RB series motor, which came in skylines. - Here are some differences in the motors KA24E (1989-1990 US spec 240SX): 135hp SOHC motor. KA24DE (1991-1998 US spec 240SX): 155hp DOHC motor. SR20DET (came in 3 different forms in various Japanese cars, such as the 180SX and the Silvia): It came as the S13 SR20DET Redtop which put out 205hp on a T25 turbo S13 SR20DET Blacktop which was the same exact motor as the S13 Redtop but the S13 blacktop was just newer and will most likely have less mileage on them if you buy one to do a swap S14 SR20DET Blacktop put out 225hp on a partial ball bearing T28 Turbo S15 SR20DET Blacktop put out 245hp on a full ball bearing T28 turbo. those are the motors that you will here about the most when talking about the 240SX. those letters and numbers are called the engine code and it can tell you information about the motor. The First letters are the engine series (KA, SR, RB). the number after that is the displacement in liters of the engine (2.4 liters for the KA, 2.0 liters for the SR). After the displacement number you will either see a "D" or the D will be absent, if there is a D then it means the car is DOHC and if there is no D then the car is SOHC. The "E" means electronically fuel injected and you will always see the E when talking about these main engines that people swap into 240's. The "T" at the end of the code means turbo. Sometimes there will be two T's such as in RB26DETT which would mean twin turbocharged. Hope I made that clear enough to understand. - Since your car is an 89 then that means that it came with the KA24E, which came in the 89-90 US spec 240sx. Yes the motor is good but if you plan on staying with the KA motor and turbocharging it or something then a cheap good investment would be to swap in the KA24DE DOHC motor which can be had for a couple hundred bucks. The KA is known to be a strong engine and good for turbocharging. - Unfortunately there are no V6's that just drop right into the 240. They would all require extensive modification to the engine and engine bay as well to get it to fit. It would be cool to see a VG30DETT dropped into a 240 though. Hope all this helps ![]()
