As some of you might know, the worlds largest torrent tracker located in Sweden known as ThePirateBay was recently shut down by the US Gov. on AFAA requests. With that came many protests. The main reply to this by non-pirates is "It's illegal, get over it". Now that is true, but fact remains that a torrent tracker is only a torrent search engine, it doesn't share files itself. It should in that way be as illegal as google, where you can search different trackers.
However, it still makes the illegal filesharing easier. But it didn't make it impossible getting torrents after the shut down, since most torrent users/seeders have their torrents posted on many different trackers. some other controversal news for you is that there is a party running for the elections here named simply "The Pirate Party", with only one issue, making pirating legal. What if they get their 4 person or whatever the limit mandate in the Parliament? What will happen? What will the US Gov. do then? I might a well throw in a Poll, What do you think about shutting down ThePirateBay? |

Re: TPB and overall pirating
eh? Why do I care? Bearshare, Ares, Limewire, Kazaa, and many others are still up and free.
Not to mention the other may secret ways to file share without a program and the ultimate awesomeness of how to actually rip protected CD's. But what is this...PirateBay? Never heard of it. ALl I can tell is that it's a search engine for....something.

I thought it was legal to acquire audio/game files as long as you owned a hard copy of it.

Re: TPB and overall pirating
Meh, anyone who has lived through the "Post Napster" era would have expected it coming the first time they visit the site.
The fact is, shutting down TPB will make 0% impact on global piracy rates, as the pirates will move onto a new protocol, a new technology, a new methodology - IRC, FTP, Private Forums, other public torrent trackers, friends who copy all their CDs for you etc. There is no possible way in the world the Politicians and RIAA can keep up with the pace of the technology, or the fact that the Internet is a global network. UNTIL the US starts flexing it's muscle because it has 8 out of 11 root TLD servers (or something like that), and could simply stop peering the DNS records from other countries, effectively creating a "2 tier internet", which followers of technology would know almost happened recently (as reported on Slashdot) when a couple of Tier 1 providers had mediation talks break down completely. TPB is gone, it is yesterday's news, and the only ones who give a shit are those being held responsible for the server and it's contents.

Re: TPB and overall pirating
This is all well and good.
Except for the fact that the Pirate Bay was only down for a few days. Do a google search and you'll find it alive and well. If they want to stop illegal filesharing then they can stop charging $20 for a 1/20th of a cent CD. Yes I know that there is a lot of other costs invovled. Like paying shitty actors and people who can't sing millions of dollars. What the media companies need to do is find a way to provide a superior product at a sufficently low cost with an easier to use format.

It pisses me off that you have Sony market their OMG SUPERLEET cd writers, then Sony/BMG going "DONT COPY CDS!" Yeah. Here's the technology guys. Don't use it! Art is not a commodity to be bought and sold.

Re: TPB and overall pirating
Just because they provide the tools to facilitate piracy doesn't make them responsible for people breaking the law.
Are the manufacturer's of hammers and crowbars responsible for home invasions? Anyway, I had a look on TPB website and apparantly they moved it to the NL then back to Sweden and they're planning to distribute it to servers across the world to make it harder to get rid of. I think the jury is still well and truly out on this one.

Re: TPB and overall pirating
Yes TPB is up and running after a man in London set up the servers again. And by the way, internet traffic throughout sweden dropped by 70%+ the day TBP was shut down.
