Do older camaros come in manual ?
Hey peeps,
I got a quick question to ask you guys about the 80's model camaro. Do any of you know if there was an camaro taht came in Manual ? I'm pretty sure there's a V-6 that does because there was Trans ams of the same ara with v-6 5spd.'s too. I'm asking cause I wanna turbo a camaro and do some totally new body style stuff to it. I'm trying to get all my facts together so I can start my work on paper before I do anything physical. Bu if any of you guys could help that would be great. |

Yea, the 1980 camaro came in a 3 or 4 speed manual transmission. Here's some other specs, hope they help:
1980 Camaro Production: 51,104 V6, 100,901 V8, 152,005 total. Dealer Introduction: 10/11/79 Vehicle Identification Example: 1P87LAN547484 First digit is GM Division: 1 = Chevrolet Second digit is model: P = Sport, Rally Sport, Z28, S = Berlinetta Digits 3 & 4 are body type: 87 = 2dr. coupe Fifth digit is engine code: A = 231ci V6, H = 305ci V8, J = 267ci V8, K = 229ci V6, L = 350ci V8. Sixth digit is model year: A = 1980 Seventh digit is N for Norwood assembly, L for Van Nuys. Last six digits increased one with each car built at each plant. Review: Car & Driver, 4/80 - "Chevrolet Camaro Z28 A medieval warrior on the path to a rocking chair" Dimensions Length: 197.6" Height: 49.2" Width: 74.5" Wheelbase: 108.0" Curb Weight (pounds): Base Coupe - 3328 | Berlinetta - 3363 | Z28 - 3600 1980 Spotters Guide & New Features EPA fuel economy was a big theme in 1980. In an effort to save weight the venerable but porky 250 was axed in favor of the V6. 49 states got the Chevy (odd-fire) 229 CID, while Californians got the Buick (even-fire) 231 CID. Both were 90 degree V6s, the chevy was a "3/4 V8". Good news on the Z28 front. Styling changes made the car seriously sinister. It had some extra poke under the hood too. Click here to read all about it. The Berlinetta got spiffy wire wheel covers which replaced the polycast wheels and the paint scheme for the RS model was modified. Ahoy - there was a recession looming on the horizon and sales plummetted to 1/2 of the previous years record setting level. Something needed to be done, and among the highlights? were.... 267 CID V8 debute (not available in CA thank god) 250 CID L6 eliminated, replaced with V6 new tight mesh grille To save gas - Speedo reads to 85MPH Max, down from 130. Vinal roof cover eliminated. That be kool.
Hey can you help me with this ?Ok so it hit me finnally today my 84 v6 camaro needs work not to bad on the engine stuff. But the engine needs work especially before it's back to it's prime. So I ran some numbers and finnally realize for all of what I was planning to do with the carbed v6 I coulda completed a 350 in the same amout of time for a fraction of the cost. At the smae time get a even larger hp gain. So here's my question cna you guys tell me speciaficlly what I need to buy to do the swap and some ruff numbers as to what the total swap will cost being it that I'm doing alot if not all of teh work myself. Well not absalutely by my-self my friends dad aka 60something year old hotrod god is gonna help me a little along the way. But before I even turn a wrench I need to write out what it is I'm doing what order to do it in and how much it will cost. Can you guys help me out in anyway ? ~Blackbob~ |

mmm
Well at least your doing it yourself, if you had some dealership do it they charge like $75 an hour (the good places anyway) so that will help you save a little funds. Your obviously going to need something to pull one engine out and drop the other in, the best thing to do is to get one that can hold at least 3000 lbs. As to what your going to need i really don't know (an ass load of tools, and patience) I'm sure there are people on here can help you more though so i'll shut up.

For one thing, if you are gonna get a 350, try to find a donor car that is a 3rd gen camaro so you will have all of the proper brackets for air conditioning, alternator, etc., you will need motor mounts for a 350, gonna need a whole new exhaust, (exhaust off of the V6 may not fit right). Probably a new driveshaft for the proper length. Basically, you might just want to wait until a 3rd gen that already has a 350 comes around, it will save you $$$ and an ass-load of work. If not, just try to find a good 3rd gen donor car at a junkyard or something so you will have all the parts you need.
