The Egg came before the Chicken!

Read.....
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/britainscienceoffbeat

Quote:
LONDON (AFP) - Which came first, the chicken or the egg? According to a scientist, a philosopher and a chicken farmer, it was the egg, British newspapers reported.

The key to the age-old question apparently lies in the fact that since genetic material does not change throughout an animal's life, the first bird that evolved into a chicken must have initially existed as an embryo inside an egg.
Professor John Brookfield, from England's University of Nottingham, concluded that because of this, the living organism inside the eggshell would have had the same DNA as the chicken it turned into.
The specialist in evolutionary genetics was quoted in a number of newspapers as saying: "Therefore the first living thing which we could say unequivocally was a member of the species would be this first egg. The egg came first."
Brookfield's conclusion was backed up by Professor David Papineau, of King's College, London, and the chairman of the trade body Great British Chicken, Charles Bourns.
Papineau, an expert in the philosophy of science, argued that the first chicken must have emerged from an egg even though it was laid by a different species of bird, but it was still a chicken egg because it had a chicken in it.
"The conclusion therefore must be that the egg came first and the chicken afterwards," he stated.
Bourns' methodology was not explained in The Times, the Daily Mail and the Independent, who all carried the story.
"Eggs were around long before the first chicken arrived," he affirmed.

Re: The Egg came before the Chicken!

I find it to be truly amazing the improtant things scientist and such are trying to figure out. You know who cares about curing cancer and hiv. Instead lets do a study on goth to suicide ratio, which is first the chicken or the egg. And most importantly where did hiv come from. Which i read was from a chimp, yesterday.

but my theory on the egg thing was shelton from garfield and friends. he came first since he was practicly half of each

Re: The Egg came before the Chicken!

I think I would use common sense to answer "egg" for that question.

Re: The Egg came before the Chicken!

if dna is only altered while in the emryo state, and the embryo is in the egg, than would the animal that layed th egg be a chicken?

Re: The Egg came before the Chicken!

If the egg came first, who hatched it?

Dont the chickens have to keep the eggs warm for a good amount of time before hatching?

The question is, how did the egg get there if there wasn't something to lay it, thus causing the animal, in this case a relative of the chicken, to come first.

But what the article was saying is that something before hatched this one egg to create the Chicken. Maybe it was some relative of the chicken.

Re: The Egg came before the Chicken!

The egg was laid, and then the embryo changed into a chicken.

The argument is supported by the fact that DNA will not change after conception. So, some bird had to lay an egg, and out popped a different bird... the chicken. nuckin futz.

Re: The Egg came before the Chicken!

but wait... does that mean it was a chicken egg? Just cuz it changed into a chicken in the egg, I don't think that necessarily makes it a chicken egg. So if you're asking what came first the chicken or the chicken egg.... its even more complicated.
