Completed - Revell Shelby Cobra 427

Shelby Cobra 427. I completed this one quite a while ago now, or so it seems. The kit is the Revell Monogram kit, that I couldn’t buy in the UK no matter how hard I looked. I ended up getting the kit imported from the states. I think the kit is now out in the UK, as I have seen one or two retailers now stocking this one.

The kit itself is fine, its well detailed, lots of parts, all molded in white plastic. Makes painting a whole lot easier. But I soon realised that after all the Tamiya kits I’ve built the Revell required a lot more test fitting and preparation. The fitment of some parts was atrocious. The exhausts were so poor I had to rebuild them with putty. The windscreen was also warped in my kit, so I couldn’t use it.

The kit chrome was all but useless. I stripped it all off, and used various shades of Alclad II and Alclad II Chrome to give me metal finishes.

I flocked the carpets, added the engine bonnet latch, made engine wires out of old USB cable and made engine wire clips out of silver painted masking tape.

I painted the body with Satin Black, with light coats of Mica Blue over the top and then applied a whole lot of X22 clear. 9 coats of X22 if I remember. 3 before decals, and then 6 after decals. X22 is a great clear, and whole lot safer then TS-13 when decals are concerned.

The end result wasn’t too bad, and I’d build the kit again, but it took a long time, as fitment was poor in places, and the parts required a lot of cleanup.

Excuse the pictures. I’d just got a stand at the time, and was messing about. I’ve just realised they are all at funny angles, but in focus if nothing else. LOL

Another great build. Mine's sitting in the closet collecting dust.

WOW!!! That is amazing! Not only does the metallic shine appear 'in scale', but even the tonneau cover looks like it really is material stretched across the cockpit!

Do the doors & boot also open? If not, those are probably the best blacked-out panel lines that I've ever seen. Also, those camera angles show off the shape very nicely

Man that is gorgeous! Superb finish and very realistic details in the cockpit and the like. Is the cut down curved windscreen your own creation?

Re: Completed - Revell Shelby Cobra 427

Rallyraider -

the windscreen was kit supplied. I just painted a silver band, and added a few black dots to look like bolts. The full windscreen was warped, and I tried to bend it round using a hairdyer, but it didnt work. The glass was too out of shape, and using a hairdyer hazed the clear. Oh well.

Thanks for the cool comments guys. Makes me want to keep building models.

Winstona, keep working on your Cobra. I'll keep watching your WIP.
