Re: Keep your engine running forever?
Change the oil and filter every 3000 miles, drive it like a grandma, and keep all maintenance current.
It also has a great deal to do with engine design. Many American car engines (up to the past decade) would typically last 100-200k miles depending on the individual build quality and how it was driven and maintained. Contrast that with some of the Mercedes and BMW engines from the 70s that are still running strong with 600k up to a million miles on them.

Re: Keep your engine running forever?
get a diesel, they last soo long, it's not uncommon for them to outlast 2 or 3 regular gasoline engines.
other than that, keep the maintenance up to date, using quality lubes (synthetic) can help remove some strain on the engine, drive like a granny on sleeping pills (minus the crashing)
