need some advice on a cracked windshield. Are there any do it yourself products that actually work to fix a cracked/cracking windshield?

The crack keeps growing!!!

Re: cracked windshield

i don't know of any products that actually fix the problem, i know there are some that help slow it down if you catch it early. how big is that crack, it's probably too late and you'll have to replace it.

Re: cracked windshield

I am sure there is a paste or compound one might call it to stop or slow the process down, like bourito said. Once again it must be applied early and probably will not do any good for growing cracks/or when temperature changes.

In NY you would have to have it replaced no matter what size the crack is.

Re: cracked windshield

Most windshield shops can fix a crack upto 18". Its filled with a superglue like substance that if forced into the crack, I'v seen DIY chip repair kits, but the quality of them usually isnt good and you can see the chip, they also dont work on cracks though.

Re: cracked windshield

There are temporary fixes, but once a glass cracks it pretty much on the way to death.

Glass is not a crystalline substance. Its a crystal that is melted, formed, and cooled. It doesn't form a crystal when it re-cools which is one of the reasons its clear. If you start a crack, its going to continue. You can fill it with a crystalline repair stuff like the super-glue discussed above, but it will rarely solve the problem. One light push on it from your girlfriend's foot from inside or one little application of pressure from the outside with a squeegie can re-introduce the crack.

Considering how much it is to fix the crack, a new windshield might cost twice as much, but is a more viable alternative. I had a windshield re-crack after a repair simply by driving 75 mph. The wind pressure was enough to crack it again.

Re: cracked windshield

i'd say my crack is about 12 inches now. it started out as a small knick in the glass. The car sat out back most of the winter. I didn't look at it on a regular basis and all of the sudden i see a 3 inch crack. over about a month it has grown to 12 inches. I think the weather had something to do with it. we had some cold days and warm days right in a row.
