I need help

I have officially been preapproved for $170,000 and now I just need to know what I want. I am undecided between the Audi A8L W12 and the Bentley Continental GT Flying Spur. I am not getting the coupe Bentley. I need four doors. If anyone has any personal references or experience with any of these cars and how well they perform (on every aspect) it would help me out greatly. Thank you.

Re: I need help

Other then the obvious stuff like styling and cost, the Flying Spur and the A8 W12 arn't going to be very different. VW/Audi owns Bentley, so the Continental GT and Flying Spur both share its chasis and engine with the top-of-the-line VW Phaeton W12 and Audi A8 W12. The Bentley is a bit more powerful due to a turbocharger, but is also a bit heavier. The steering feel and handling should be pretty similar. I don't have any personal experience with the Bentley, but my guess is that its going to be more luxurious and a bit quicker, while the Audi should be less expensive and more reliable.

Might I ask why you are set on these two cars and not their competition? Why not a Benz AMG S-Class, BMW 760Li, or Maserati Quattroporte?

Exclamation Re: I need help

i am sticking with these cars because I have been in love with the a8l w12 for as long as I have known about it. and the bentley just seemed lik the next logical choice. (i dont want bmw, mercedes) i love the styling of both of these cars. ive driven my cousins bentley but i just dont know if it did as much for me as the audi did. also, I believe the audi gets remarkably better gas mileage.

Gas mileage? Would someone who has $170k to blow on a car care about gas mileage?

Re: I need help

i dunno how much of a "tuner" you are. you could do alot to any vehicle with 170 grand, you could go way of charger/ 300c, benz ,beemwer, and have plenty left over for fun.

or ... you could go old school, chevelle, fury iii, galaxie 500. hell where i used to live, some guy had a benz, and a bently (both were '50's) he said he'ld sell both for 15 grand.

i say this because, while you can get respect from luxury cars.... expensive ones at that. you put a classic (restored or all origional) next to it, the classic will always turn more heads. especially older individuals (say my boss's dad.... he loves the old 40's and 50's cars) then my boss loves the muscle cars. it all depends on who you are planning for heads to turn.

People get rich based on considerations exactly like that.

Re: I need help

Believe me i've met some stingy rich people. But their purchase decision doesnt come down to gas mileage, not if they're spending that much money. Strikes me as strange, that's all...

Re: I need help

the last time i was in a conversation about buying an expensive car, the one thing that seemed to be most important was how much of a prick you'd seem if you drove around london in one.
somewhere along the lines, the question of would you look an even bigger prick if you were also wearing shades while driving the car in london came up.
then there was the question of whether you'd go as fast as you could or if you would cruise arund leisurely in one (thus negating the raison d'etre of some of the faster cars) came up.
shades once again came up after this point.

strangely enough, mpg never featured in that conversation either.

in case you're interested, that conversation concluded that no matter how cool a DB9 is, you should never burn around london in a convertible one whilst wearing shades; whereas in a 911 of any sort, you are expected to go fast and it'd just be wrong not to.

Re: I need help

i never thought of the how ild look aspect. to me you candrive an awsome car and not be a prick, its all how you display yourself. if you have the matching jacket, driving glasses, and gloves... well in america, we think you are a pompous prick, however you step out of a 911 in blue jeans, and a t shirt, i just think ... rich guy... at least he doesnt rub it in. and ild be more prone to talking to the guy... then insulting him.

i mean no offence if i insulted anyone.

Re: I need help

Get a Mazda Bongo van and put a 12a Rotary in it, you'd get mad respect if you moved to South or West Auckland.

Or just get a Saxo 1.1 First and chuck in some phat sounds and da phattest bodykit you can buy and still have dollaz left over fo nawz.

On a more serious note, if you can stomach the HUGE depriciation, get the A8 W12, it's honest, understated elegance, I love it. Or just get a Rota or a Saxo....

Re: I need help

and on a slightly more on topic note, i've always had a bit more affection for the vw phaeton than i have for the W12. As mush as i do like A8s, i can't shake the notion that a second-hand phaeton is such a bargain for such an over engineered machine.

Re: I need help

Oh god yes, but the V10 TDi Phaeton is definitely my poison, I just hope I can find one where the owner had the poor foresight to option it up as far as it'll go
