Please heeeeeelp with Primera 2.0 TD

Please bear with me on this one. I recently bought a 2.0 GX TD Primera, in which the engine management light was coming on. I returned it to the guy I bought it from to be told a couple of days later that the injector pump was faulty. This cured the light problem but a couple of days later I noticed it was lacking power. So after bringing it back a second time he replaced the air flow meter which cured that problem. But now I notice that if I am going down the gears or if I have to break in an emergency and mainly in 3rd gear, once the rev counter goes down to about 1000 revs and I push the clutch in, more often than not the engine cuts out and other times the rev counter needle shoots down to zero and the engine just about recovers. I know 1000 revs in third is low but should the engine cut out? Is this maybe just the way the car is supposed to react? I am sorry about the length of this post but if anyone could shed some light on this I would be greatful!!!!!! P.S - I would prefer not to bring it back to the guy a third time as he tried to tell me that there was nothing wrong with it the first two times.

Is it fine on tickover/startup?

If not, it could just be your idle/pedal adjustment.

Does it only happen after a long run??

Could you clarify the symptoms a little more?

If this only happens after the cars been running for a while, then the first thing I'd suggest is changing the oil. After a long run, the oil gets hot and it thins out. If you've got the wrong kind of oil in there, it'll thin out too much and you'll loose all oil pressure. This can cause ths problem (it was actually quite a common problem on old sports cars).

Thanks alot for the reply. The problem occurs all the time either when the engine is warm or cold. It tends to start ok in the mornings I think, the reason I say I think is because sometimes I have to turn it for about 3 or 4 seconds, I think this is normal but I have had older cars that have started up quicker. A bit more info on the problem then. At about 1000 revs in third gear with no feet on the pedals and then I push in the clutch (maybe about 1100 revs as well), the engine stalls most of the time but if I let the revs fall to about 850 or down to the idle point which is about 700-750 before pushing in the clutch, then it does not cut out, and nor does it cut out if the revs are above about 1100. I hope this sheds a bit more light on the problem and thanks again for taking the time to reply to me. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Couple of things to check:

Firstly, you should have a damper fitted on the end of the accelerator cable (engine end). When you take your foot off the pedal, this makes a slow decent to it's resting place. If this is knackered, then the airflow will snap shut and cause this problem.

If this is ok, then I suggest you start looking for air leaks in some of the breather pipes - either at the engine side or the turbo.

Question: if you pull the shifter into neutral WITHOUT using the clutch, does the same thing happen?
