Quad 4 H.O. specs
(Copied from the Cavalier forum)
I know, it should be in the Pontiac forum, cause it's for a Fiero engine swap, but it's also a Cavalier engine, as well as a Sunfire engine. I only know this so far about the engine: 1. After 94' there was a 10-15HP loss becuase they rebalanced the crank and screwed everything up. 2. There's now a GM bolt on supercharger for this engine (and the 2.2 ecotec) which gives it another 40-50 HP 3. The whole assembly weighs 322 Lbs What I mainly need to know: 1. The weight of the block itself 2. The stock redline, and the max redline (after upgrades) 3. Who sells upgrades (piston rods, pistons, valvetrain stuff, cranks) 4. Was there an H.O. model before 95'? The horsepower and torque levels would be nice also, as well as Vin number Id's and other ID info, and anything else anyone knows about the engine, power secrets and stuff. I'm putting it into a Fiero next summer, as this engine is lighter than the stock 4 cylinder, and there's also more parts, as GM is discontinuing parts for my engine. I'm trying to acheive a 50/50 weight balance, and this engine, given it's aluminum and not iron, can help drastically, as well as relocating the battery to the front of the car. Thanks in advance everyone.

Update:
My cuz just crashed her 94' Oldsmobile Acheiva, so I can get the engine from there. It's not the H.O. version, but oh well. I'm ripping it apart anyway. |

The Quad 4 H.O's first came out in 1989 I think. I don't recall any 88's having them and I own 2 Grand Am SE's, a 1989 and a 1990. They both have the H.O.'s. I don't remember all of the specs, but factory they came with 180 HP and I think 165 or 170 lbs of torque. Compression is 10:1. In other words, they fly!!
I think after 1991 they started killing the HP because of startup emissions, head gaskets going bad, etc... although my 90 model now has 247,000 miles on it so far. But the original owner had the gasket replaced years ago as a recall. I have a 1989 HO I just bought from back home (VA) that I am bringing to CA over Xmas. It only has 82,000 miles believe it or not. I like my Quads, they have been good to me so far. But I don't want a newer one...not fast enough. I still find myself racing....and beating rice burners with my 247,000 miles. I need to stop that stuff too. |

Re: Quad 4 H.O. specs
1992 was the most powerful quad, 190 HP stock.
1995 was the last and least powerful quad 150 HP. All others were between 180 and 185HP. None had "Emissions" that we are use to (no EGR, no Air pumps) and none until 95 had balance shafts. all quads bolt up to the quad trannies. So a W41 (190hp) will bolt right into the 150 hp engine bay. Since the W41 is also the rarest of the breed, good luck in finding one, but mantapart may still have a few. |

Re: Quad 4 H.O. specs
i say screw it dude.. brand new the 180 HP H.O. grand ams and 442's went 15.1 and a fastest of like 14.8 from what i have heard.. i mean it really depends on how fast you wanna go, but they aren't reliable engines.. the pre 95 quad 4's are known for throwing timing chains.. In fact i once looked at a grand am with the H.O in it and it had a timing chain break and in put a hole in the oil pan.., I myself owned a 2000 Z24 cavy and i moded it and the best it ran was 15.3... most of the other J bodies or quad cars i've seen run 16's... that 15.3 was very hard to manage.. i had the following: AEM intake, AEM pullies, Venom fuel rail, FPR, short shifter, CF hood, Cat back with gutted cat, and a couple other things.. But its just slow, and you'll never get a good launch without drag radials and the axles will break before that happens.. FWD cars just aren't made for going fast.. I know a kid with a hatchback civic with a Turbo'd LS vtec swap.. he has 341 WHP and best 60ft he could muster was 2.0 which sucks.. not to brad but any RWD car can manage 2.0 with shitty stock tires... To me the hole FWD deal is a waste of money and time.. i'd just get a real car thats made to do what you wanna do.. But most importantly do what you want and what makes you happy..
P.S. the GM super charger now sold is not made for pre 2000 J-bodies or grand ams.. they only make them for Manual transmission j-bodies 2000 and up.. Also they cost around 3K and you can't drive it until you get a reflash from the dealer which cost a lot also.. not to mention, the most the super charger will give you is 190 at the flywheel unless you fabricate a smaller pulley.. no companies make them.. and even after spending 3k it will only run 14.5.. best time i have heard or seen was 14.3 with a very small pulley that a guy made for it... I used to be into this scene and i was a regular poster on the J-body.org site since 1998... trust me, its a lost cause...

Re: Quad 4 H.O. specs
The timing chain break was from the tensioner wearing out and not being replaced in time. the replacement tensioners were of better quality and pretty much solved the problem.
The quad ran stock a 14.7 in 1991 with a w41 190 hp quad. faster than that years z-28. |

Re: Quad 4 H.O. specs
yea 14.7 was good for back then.. even now thats impressive, but for me and my needs, 14.7 isn't gonna cut it.. and moding it wouldn't be a good investment... i know so many ppl that end up giving up on there quad projects cause they just never last and you have to constantly repair them.. but hey if you got the money and its your thing then go for it...
