SES/Fuel Injector

My car started idling real jerky and the SES light came on. When I took it into the shop they said that a cylinder was misfiring and a fuel injector needed to be replaced. I read a couple other threads where the advice was to check plugs/injector cleaner first. Would that be the best course of action to take?

Also, where are the injectors located on a 2000 Olds Alero GLS (6cyl)? Is it hard to get to? Any links on the procedure/graphics on location? Thanks.

Re: SES/Fuel Injector

Depending on your mileage I wouldn't rule out the plug wires in addition the the spark and fuel injectors. The plugs and wires are the easiest. To get the the fuel injectors the upper intake manifold (plenum) must be removed. You might consider running some good fuel injection system cleaner through like Lucas first.

Re: SES/Fuel Injector

Well the mileage is at 56k, I got it at around 25k not sure if they were ever changed. Thanks for the heads up though, I'll go that route first.

A friend and I were messing around with the plugs and it doesn't seem to jerk anymore? Does the SES light correct itself automatically or do you need to reset it?

Re: SES/Fuel Injector

You will need to have someone with a scanner turn the light off for you. I have to agree with Bob that you need to replace the wires and plugs before you change the injector. The mileage you state is too low for an injector to fail although it is not impossible but the stealership can make more money replacing it than they can replacing plugs and wires. Try the injector cleaner too and see what happens.
