F1 teams would be unable to modify their engine designs for three years from 2008, according to Max Mosley's latest radical proposal.

In his compulsive drive to cut costs for smaller teams, the FIA President says manufacturers should have to submit a fixed V8 specification to the governing body so that it could monitor and penalise any design tweaks between 2008-2010.

The move could then precede Mosley's next step - a fuel consumption formula for 2011.

Mosley said the beauty of an engine freeze, and the associated cost savings, is that nothing will change for the man in the grandstand.

Although some quarters of the specialised media claim that Renault's interest in the idea is 'new information' - and therefore has political implications - the concept of a three year freeze first surfaced in January 2005 -- in a letter from the French carmaker to the FIA boss.

« The technical and sporting regulations should be frozen for a minimum of three years, » the team proposed more than a year ago. « Stability of regulations will reduce costs. »

Personally, I think Mosley needs to move to Nascar, he certainly seems to be intent on making F1 a copy of the tedious 'great American motorsport'.

What's next, Mosley proposes all F1 tracks are only allowed to have 2 to 3 turns which must all be left hand and not exceed a length of 1 mile?

Terrible idea. Without engine changes you would have the same teams winning 2008-2010, and the same teams losing. I don't like this at all. Teams should be constantly improving their engines, not relying on 3 year old technology.

Another of his recent gems was stating the next Concorde agreement should pay only the privateer teams, not the manufacturers. Funny part was that for some reason he didn't view Ferrari as a manufacturer under this potential rule. The more things change, the more they stay the same...

Renault actually supports the engine rules freeze.

Teams would also be allowed chassis development, which is more than enough for teams to give themselves a chance.

Hang on Renault's proposal of a regulations freeze and Max's of a development freeze are two entirely seperate things!

Rule stability is the one thing F1 needs over and above anything else, it is the only way to reduce costs and bring the grid closer together.

Renault's letter is simply being turned against them in this situation, it's Max's special way of trying to place the blame elsewhere....

he really should move to nascar, i got into F1 because it was different from all the other motorsports, now its just becoming another spec series

well ill tell you... the one rule change that really pissed me off was the rule on mandated gears, i mean not even nascar did that until a year or two ago.

True, but they also had the best driver in the world. Engine changes should level the playing field from year to year at least among the major teams.
