Decal Question

Hi

Does anyone recommend cutting the clear edging off decals before applying them?

Re: Decal Question

Yes.
For some decals, like those for instrument faces its the only way to get them to fit.

Re: Decal Question

Sure do, otherwise the clear carrier film will be visible.

Mainly on Flat or Satin surface. Removing it will be better. On Glossy surface, it's not that visible if well applied.

Re: Decal Question

Thanks! I have been wondering this for years. Especially with regards to large bodywork decals.

I try to avoid applying decals to matt or satin surfaces. Doing so risks "silvering" and poor adhesion. I start with a gloss surface and then matt or satin coat it after decaling.

Re: Decal Question

Excuse my ignorance, but Is Chrome Silver a Satin type finish?

Re: Decal Question

No, chrome silver is the basic colour. On top of that you have GLOSS, which is smooth and shiny through to MATT which is roughter and non reflective. SATIN fits in somewhere in the middle. Chrome sliver could be any of the three.

Semi-gloss is another way of saying satin. Even less common is semi-flat.
Same as matt can be called flat.

Re: Decal Question

Here are a couple of questions that I've been too embarassed to ask for 18months now.

When you trim the decal to remove the excess carrier, how do you do this? Scalpel, scissors? After all, ashboard dials are soo small!

Also, do you cut ALL the way through the backing paper or is it enough to just "score" the carrier film enough to seperate the excess from the main decal?

Thanks.

Re: Decal Question

I cut through the paper backer and all. If you just score it, sometimes excess carrier film will stick to the decal and end up places you dont want them. oh i use a scalpel aka x-acto knife, but a nice new fresh one, and always cut on a cutting matt for good clean fun

post whore strikes again.....

dont worry ive banned myself, just thought this might be useful info....
