Which primer under British Racing Green?

Hi

I'm preparing a Lotus Elan 26R to be painted with Tamiya TS British green but I'm not sure if I should use white or gray primer.

Does anoune know if the British green is affected much from the primer color? or does it cover as good as Tamiya TS black?

I'm not aiming for the perfekt "racing green" color but want a dark green color that almost look black in "dawn light".

Re: wich primer under British racing green?

Depends on the opacity of the green topcoat, some greens can be fairly translucent. Modeller's green for instance is almost clear! Whereas many automotive laquers will cover over anything. If your green is in the former category I'd use a grey primer, then matt dark green, followed by the top coat. A white primer coat is probably not required, and may take too many coats to build up a satifactory dark shade. If you want a very deep, almost black finish, then a black base coat might even be worth trying.

Sorry no definitve answer. Experiment on some scrap with the paints you have and see what works best.

Re: Which primer under British Racing Green?

I've sprayed Tamiya British Racing Green before and either would work since it is pretty opaque. I would use gray so that you don't have to spray too much to build up the color. Hope that helps.

Re: Which primer under British Racing Green?

Here is the result: Sprayed it on Tamiya gray primer, dehydrated, sanded and lightly polished.
