UPDATED: 911 Turbo 1988

Hi

This is my first model project since I discovered the joy of model building about three months ago.

It's a Tamiya 1988 911 turbo built straight from the box. Since I'm new to building I am focusing on learning to paint bodies, so detailing will come later.

It's primed with Tamiya primer then airbrushed with Tamiya acrylics. Red over silver base and coated with transparent red on top (total of 12 layers). Irl it looks even better than in the pics with a really deep shine.

Thanks to the info on this forum I think it came out pretty good for a first atempt :-) but the masking job was a pain in the ...

Next step is the final polishing, windows and exterior details, so I'm hoping to finish it this weekend.

I ordered some cool wheels on HLJ that I hope will look awasome on this car:

18inch VeilSide Andrew Baccarat

What do you think?

BTW: The biggest problem with this hobby is that I'm buying new kits much faster than I can build them. So many cars and so little time...

The car looks fantastic. Your first attempt turned out unbelievable!
You'll notice that your supply will definitely increase over your builds. You almost have to buy what you like these days for fear of not finding them at a later date or paying a much more exorbitant price for them.

Anyway, I think the Porsche looks great. I'm unsure of the wheel choice you have lined up for it, I wouldn't know what to think without seeing them on the car. In my mind I don't think they'd look to bad though.

Kits are always easier to buy than to build...

Your paintwork is flawless! That kind of finish using acrylics is beyond my comprehension. Wonderful job!

I like those Baccarats you picked out, yet I find myself attracted to the stock wheels almost as much... Your call, I believe it will look great either way!

Wow, your paint job is perfect! You got yourself a great start! I still fight with painting all these days and still struggle...

Nice build! The finish looks very good.

This kit, together with Tamiya's 911 Speedster and Flatnose, make terrific first builds (since they're essentially the same kit with different bodies). Simple construction, but Tamiya didn't skimp on body detail at all. Of course, the masking can be rather tricky, but you seem to have managed that very well, too.

This is one of the few Tamiya kits that you can use Fujimi wheels on with no modification- however, any open style wheel may show off the kit's lack of brake detail. Most Fujimi wheels come with a set of Brembo disks, and if you can get over the idea of putting Brembo's on a Porsche, you may be able to find a way to mount them. I'll be curious to see what the 911 looks like on those wheels.

Don't worry too much about aquiring faster than you build- we all seem to do it. Judging by your start here, you'll enjoy building them all.

I would keep the Fuchs. But it's your model. Porsches are like Subies to me, only certain rims look good on them. Paint looks amazing!! Keep up the awsome progress so far!

Thanks for the replies.

I'm planning to use the original Fuchs wheels on a old Revell 914/6 kit wich I have started to work on (needs a lot of body fixing) but the HLJ package wont get here until late next month, so I guess I will have to stick with the Fuchs wheels.

I have some questions about painting the wheels. I know the center should be black and the sides should be polished aluminium, so I am planning to paint the whole wheel with Tamiya TS black ,mask the center and then spray alclad II polished aluminum on them. But can I paint this directly on the original chrome, or do I have to strip the chrome first?

Stripping the chrome will make matters much easer to deal with.
The paint will go on, but doesn't adhere well to the chrome. In fact it'll start flaking off before you know it.

UPDATE: 911 Turbo 1988

UPDATE:

Here is the latest update. Car is fitted with some nice Aoshima VIP Koenig-imp wheels.

Some of the black trim came off while polishing, and i'm not satisfied with the finish on the side mirrors and the "headlight rings". Why did'nt Tamyia make the rings seperate from the clear lights?) QUESTION: how is this done in the Fujimi Enthusiast kits?

Anyway the car only needs a little touching up and some decals before I consider it finished

Fotos are taken on a slotcar box-base wich will serve as display case after I priint out some Porsche logos :-)

Wich Porsche would you like to see next? I have 356, 914 and 928 kits, and I have ordered some 924 and 944 kits :-)

BTW: JPG compression is not nice to red color.
