ECU resetting...

Ok.. some issues with resetting the 2000+ ECU's

there's no damn screw to turn on them!!

Some people had mentioned the reset screw and the procedure. (all owned 99 and younger cars). I took a look at my ECU and saw no such screw or hole with the screw inside.

I then asked Henry who owns a 99, he told me there is a sticker over it, which mine did have a sticker on it.

I took the sticker off, there was a hole underneath, but there is nothing in the hole... (verified by sliding a screw driver into it for about 4 inches)

I then emailed 1PNYBOY since he is an Infiniti service advisor, and he confirmed that there is no screw on the 2000+ cars...

does anyone know if you can reset the ECU using a generic odb-II scan tool? if so, any idea where to get one? god knows i'll never get my hands on a Consult tool

some other points...

someone from the UK had mentioned that their primera ecu also does not have this screw and that you can you can bridge some contacts near your fuse box under the steering column to reset the ecu. not sure if he meant the pin connections on the Consult/Scan tool harness.

no, I do not want to remove battery cables to do the job. the must be an easier/proper way. i've also heard that removing the cables does not really clear the memory from the ecu.

please help / comment where you can!

well I asked 1PNYBOY since he work for Infiniti's service dept. for 7 years.

He told me that they never reset ECU's like that anyway. The hook up their Consult tool directly to the car and reset it that way. Even on the 99 and younger cars...

Well, b00gie, I happen to have an extra ECU (a friend of mine totalled his primera, and before givin to the insurance company, i got it for future plans), and I just removed the top panel, and guess what, yes there is a screw. I'll try to take a pic of it tomorrow at work.

There is a oval hole with a transparent sticker over it, and next to it there is a small hole, and next to it, there is another sticker (in my case it says nissan) and under that stiker is the hole for a plastic screw.

Again, this is a ECU from a 2000 primera. Pics tomorrow

hmm which side did you find this on?

top, bottom, front, rear, right or left?

the sticker i peeled off was on the "rear" which faces the driverside. this is where the screw was supposed to be.

the "front" which has all the connectors attached faces the passenger side.

the "right" side faces the engine and the "left" side faces your shifter..

here's a pic of me peeling the sticker off the "rear" this exposed one hole which had no screw in it

That will be the side totally oposed to the one with the connectors. I think is the side on your picture. The hole is 1 inch from the far end. It will be at the left of the sticker you are peeling.

I'll give it another look tomorrow in the daylight, but I only found the one hole... not multiple holes as you described... would like to see the pics if you could get some.

Still, I'd like to know if you can reset w/ a generic scan tool. And this whole "bridging of contacts" method...

Well, the case of your ECU looks a little different to mine. You don't seem to have the oval hole I mentioned.

Well, you will see tomorrow when I take the pic.

I did read it, and you didnt verify there was no screw.

I read every single post here, whether it pertains to me or not. (P10 only.. California/Houston meets.. I read them all)

In your post you said you didnt want to peel the sticker off because you said you were scared of voiding your warranty.

I was told that on the 99's the screw was under this sticker.

I'm not scared of warranty here-say, so I went and pulled it off... found no screw.

You didnt even look... :right:

Although potentially overkill, surely unplugging the car battery for a few minutes would reset the ECU? That is how I reset mine, and it *seems* to work...

I've read that this doesnt necessarily clear the memory.

Also, disconnecting the battery takes a lot longer than the correct way for the 99 and younger G20's which takes less than 5 minutes.

...not to mention the fact that by disconnecting the battery you will then have to go back and set the time in your car, all the stereo settings (stations/EQ/etc)... with everything I have programmed on my stereo, all the settings on my stereo alone would take me over 30 minutes, not to mention the other work

there has to be a way to do it for the 2000+ cars

I'm sure there is an easier way, but all I did was mention the definate "overkill" method that would work if everything else failed.

Maybe the only other way of 2000+ ECUs is via the Consult machine? After all, cars are becoming less and less servicable by the home mechanic these days, and maybe this is just another stage?

After all, it isn't like the majority of car owners would even know where the ECU was (hell, I suspect half of them wouldn't know what an ECU was!) and only a tiny percentage was have the knowledge and reasoning to reset it.

Most owners, particularly of luxury market cars such as the G20, will take their cars to the dealer for anything more complex than refilling the washer bottle
