Cat back means from the catalytic converter back. You would unbolt or cut your stock exhaust off at the rear of the converter and bolt in the new one. Not sure about any other types. Do you have a specific type in mind?

Re: can some1 explain to me the different type of exhausts

There are 3 types of exhaust upgrades: Muffler, Cat-back, and Headers.
A performance muffler is just that, it's basically a muffler designed to eliminate back pressure, however, everything from the muffler forward stays stock. It's easy to install and the cheapest of the three. Cat back replaces everything from the Catalytic converter back (including muffler).

Headers are an upgraded exhaust manifold, thus reducing backpressure as soon as exhaust gases leave the engine. Cat-back along with headers will give the best performance possible.

Re: can some1 explain to me the different type of exhausts

theres also some wierd theory about picking the right headers for your engine based on when some kind of wave goes back to the engine. Supposedly maximizes exhaust efficiency. However, that is all i know about that lol.

basically though, the less back pressure the better, though some people dont recommend really low backpressure, they say it burns up your exhaust valves, but that makes no sense to me... if its out of the engine, how would it matter what happens to it then? i would get a set of headers, and then make the exhaust from there to fit the headers...

by the way, if your engine is completely stock, upgrading the exhaust wont really do much good, as the engine will be choked by the cam(s) and head(s) likely well before the exhaust is a major factor in holding back power. a stock 350 chevy v8 probably would only see 10ish horsepower from a good exhaust upgrade. Its the huge-cammed, high flowing engines that really need the high flowing exhausts lol

Not nessassarly, you need flow in order to fully excivate the exhaust, and alot of motors use overlap which uses the "suction" from the exhaust to help pull air/fuel into the motor.

Major misconception, there is no way to know what an exhaust will do unless you look at it case by case- most modern cars the exhaust flows very well and has little back pressure. Older cars, this was not the case at all, and can see decent power gains from an exhaust. Your example of a chevy 350, you didnt specify if you meant one from the 60's or from this year. In which case they would be two very differnt motors.

Re: can some1 explain to me the different type of exhausts

You felt the need to correct a six month old spelling error, and not even answer the question that braught the thread back, or declair this a dead thread?

Running it without a cat will be fine, but theres no real reason to do it that way. Also brining up a thread thats six months old isnt the best thing to do.
