WIP: The Dino 36 hour Challenge :)

A bit of fun with this one.

I’ve been building my 2CV for almost 9months now and have come to the conclusion that I am probably the slowest builder in the world. My wife and kids are away and I pretty much had this weekend to myself so I wondered if I could start a kit at 18.00 on Friday and finish it by 24.00 on Sunday. Below you can see how it went.

The kit I chose is the Fujimi 246GT curbside kit. I really like the Dino. I think it has super cool lines and I think that its “almost a Ferrari heritage” increases its character.

To save time I wanted to build it strictly OOB. The planned body colour is Metallic Gold over a Metallic Silver base coat (both Motip auto sprays).

Friday 20.01.2006
18.00
We’re off!

19.00
Sprues checked and washed, factory chrome removed, instructions read 4 times.

22.00
Cleaning parts up from flash!! Bloody hell there’s more here than in Flash Gordon!!
WHY does everyone want to speak to me today!!!!
WHY do I have a dog?!?!?

23.00
Scribed the panel lines out with new Hassagawa tool. On line with friends at AF with question about heat staining

24.30
Sanding down the body parts. Test fitting Instructions indicate fitting chin after mounting chassis but no way this will fit well – will need to fix before painting and then mounting body and chassis is going to be difficult
Off to bed

Saturday 21.01.2006
08.30
Back to work

09.30
Still test fitting body parts.

10.00
Work stopped!!

14.00
Back to work. Darn! My back hurts!

15.30
Glass parts fit like a square peg in a round hole. Soo much for OOB – since the hood is a separate part, I couldn’t just glue it on so I’ll try making my first hinge mechanism
Work stopped AGAIN!! My 2 elder kids want to go to the movies – oh we, quality time …..

20.00
Back at work. Hinge 50% done, cut headrests off – kit parts look AWFULL!!
vents on chin drilled out to accept some PE mesh

21.300
Hood done + 1 seat

24.00
End of day 2. Lots of puttying to remove bad fit lines.
No way I will get this finished by tomorrow Not even close to getting some paint on plastic!.
Will keep on fighting though

Sunday 22.01.2006

09.00
Back to work

10.00
Close to primer stage!!

10.15
Priming in grey

11.00
White primer. Damn! Dropped it in the floor and hinge mechanism knocked off!! Need to clean up and smooth out

12.00
Fixed!
Fist coat of Allclad black base applied to chrome parts (thank Lord this stuff dries quickly ). Got to eat something!

13.00
2 mist coats of Mettallic Silver and more Allclad gloss base

14.30
First mist coats of final colour (Gold Metallic)

16.00
Starting on interior parts – cleaning up

18.00
Strting to clear coat with TS-13

20.00
3-4 mist cots of clear applied
Various Allclad colours applied to metal” parts

24.00
Game Over! My “almost a Ferrari” Dino is “almost made”
I didn't make it but it was great fun trying I think that if I had tried this with a newer Tamiya kit, it hadn't snowed so much and I didn't have kids and a dog, I might, just might, have made it. On the other hand I wasn't going top risk screwing what I had done by rushing too much)

Here are some pics. Let me know if you enjoyed this thread or not.

Re: WIP: The Dino 36 hour Challenge :)

Now this is what I call a real progress thread!

Really nice to follow and such!
Too bad the story doesn't have a happy ending. I guess I ll wait around for season 2.

When you said OOB in the beginning, it wasn't really what I expected, hinging and putting the headrests on the seats and all!

Gorgeous colour choice too for this little classic, I m sure it 's quite different working on this then on Jean-Paul.

Oh and what about "sofia" for the name?

really great job, big kudos!

you might want to get rid of the dog and the cellphone and kids tho.

Re: WIP: The Dino 36 hour Challenge :)

Cool! That's a very hard curbside for a "speed build" like that. Body and chassis fitment issues require more than simple OOB techniques. But you're still really close!

We're having a "modepalooza" build w/some ACME members this year for the 24 hours of LeMans. We'll start at the beginning of the race; we'll have to have our models finished by the end. My key to doing that is picking a simple curbside that I know doesn't require more than 10 hours of work. I think we're allowing people to have parts ready for paint at the start (light body prep w/o any primer).

Re: WIP: The Dino 36 hour Challenge :)

I wouldnt have gotten that far in 36 days haha. Great thread Klutzy, this si groundbreaking stuff here, the future of thread authoring! haha you might have made it if you didnt stray from the OOB thing this kit is a nightmare as far as fitment goes, good luck get the chassis on now that you glued the nose and tail under pieces on

Great shot!
I've never managed to complete even the simplest snap kit project in just one weekend. It's always taken me two and several projects simply got out of hand and took forever to complete.

Re: WIP: The Dino 36 hour Challenge :)

So this was you're big plan for the weekend!

Have to agree- a better kit would have saved you alot of time. Still, looks like you did a terrific job, especially in the time you had.

So, did it help? Can you say it was enjoyable? Relaxing? Looking forward to seeing it done (maybe in less than 9 months?).

As for a name, easy- Ingrid. That's the name of the Ferrari's silver/gold factory color- Grigio Ingrid Metallic. Looks like you managed a terrific match.

No kids. No dog. A killswitch on the cellphone.

...but I still never finished a build on one weekend!

Keep up the great work!
