Engine will only run when choked, and other problems...

Hi there, I have a 1967 Volvo 1800S, and my problem is that, whenever i take the choke off (or even halfway off), regardless of the temperature, it loses a significant amount of power, backfires, and will sometimes stall when idling.

Also, sometimes after running for about 20 mins (or even shorter if the engine is already warm), the car will begin to lose power, and start to backfire (but usually doesnt stall). Now, im relatively sure the engine isnt overheating and seizing up, since the temp guage doesnt even go near boiling, and it has enough oil, but what could be causing these two problems??

*sigh* carburated engines

Sounds like a carberater problem.

Start with the simple things, ilde mixture, float level etc.
Then move onto to more complex things like the carb might need a rebuild.
But its hard to help more with out knowing more about the carb used.

i would change your fuel filter first, its simple and cheap. but you may very well need a float level adjustment or a thorough cleaning and rebuild of the carb.... especially if it sat up for a long period of time without driving. gasoline turns into gunk after a few months of sitting in a float bowl

Count how many turns the idle mix screws take to get seated so you know where they were. Then back them way out, crank the engine a few times, and reset them. Sometimes junk gets caught in the tiny idle circuit and doesn't let fuel through.

Short of that, just pull them off and rebuild them.
