Ball Joints in 2001 Ford Taurus

I just recently got the two front lower ball joints replaced in my car plus my alignment fixed. I paid $225 to do both. My first question is, Did I get ripped off or was that price pretty reasonable? My other question is, Could I have replaced the ball joints on my own, or is this a job for a mechanic? I would like to know in case I need to replace these in the future. I am about saving money if it is possible.

A ball joint job is for someone who knows how to do it and has the tools. Good parts are expensive. A 4 wheel alignment costs somewhere around 60 to $75 depending upon if you got it done at the dealership or not.
I personally think that you got a bargain.
Last but not least, why did you get it done in the first place? Under normal conditions they easily last 150,000 miles or more.

I have to disagree with willyum. I manage a fleet of Fords and we are really lucky to get 40,000 miles out of ball joints. We service the vehicles every 4,000 miles so lubrication is not a problem. The sealed ball joints without grease fittings are not nearly as durable as the ones with a grease fitting in them.

Is it possible that they are covered under warranty at 48,000 miles?
Mine are going on my 2001 Ford Taurus SES. I have gotten quotes of 388-450 to have everything done.
Thanks

Hi kdspark. The ball joints are only covered under the base warranty---3 years-36,000 miles.
