Exactly what happens

Exactly what happens to a car when you run it with an a bad oil leak and the engine eventually siezes. How would the car act? What would it do before it finally shut down. Cause I think I might have done it and not realize what happened. It happened pretty quickly.

Re: Exactly what happens

The motor stops and dosn't turn anymore.

Pretty simple really

(actualy if you have manual car, it can be dangerous, as it can slow or stop the back wheels depending on how badly it siezes.)

Re: Exactly what happens

Usually it happens really fast. You might get a few seconds of "gee it seems to be running hot" shortly followed by a rapid and almost instant shutdown.

The good news is that it might be salvageable or usable as a core to turn in for a new engine, but depending on what seized first it might be the bad news: boat anchor.

I know that it won't turn anymore bu this cars RPM's started going donw but went back up when I pushed more on the gas. Then the RPM's went back down then the engine cut. But I'm wondering if it has a problem with the alternator cause the power started to dim the headlights.

Re: Exactly what happens

Hmm could be, Iv seen an alternator fail suddenly, however you have to have a flat battery as well for there to be any loss of power. Otherwise you gradualy lose ignition and head lights etc.

Theres an easy way to find out though.
Try and jump start it, or put in a fully charger battery.
If it starts then the engine is ok.
If it won't turn over its stuffed.
You can also try turning it by hand useing a spanner on the crank shaft. If it turns its ok. If it dosnt its stuffed.

Where exactly would the spanner be located. Its a 4G63NT by the way. Its an almost new battery and it worked fine out of the other car I puller th battery from. But it drained the old one awfully quick so it must be the alternator. Oh an by stuffed you mean as in the engine is siezed right?

Re: Exactly what happens

Yip.

The 4g is a pretty tough engine, takes a lot of abuse to break one, so you might be on the right track with the alternator going bad.

There is a big pully on the front of the motor thats attached to the crank. Holding it on is a nut, all you need is a spanner or socket that will fit it (I have no idea, but Im guessing its about 19mm).
