D16Z Vtec Problems... Need help..
I have a 89 CRX Si that I put the SOHC 1.6 Vtec motor into. I got it running, it pulls hard and goes fast! The problem I'm having is that I don't know how to hook up the Vtec.
As of right now I have it wired to a toggle switch in the Cabin that I have to flip at time (usually around 4k) The switch def. does work because when I hit it, the exhaust note changes, and the car starts to pull much harder. My question is, how do I wire it up so that its computer controlled and works like its supposed to. I mean the thing is ghetto rigged and works well enough for now, it would just be more convienient without this gay flip switch there. BTW, I'm runnin the Stock Si Harness and the stock Si PCM. Any help/info would be greatly appreciated. |

well...w/o some significant wiring changes and a new distributor and ecu, you're not gonna be able to have it 'computer-controlled'...but you can keep your stock ecu and run a RPM-activated switch that will operate vtec when a certain rpm is reached...these pages should have some info in them...you'll probably have to scroll down a bit...

as marked mentioned, you'll need to wire up a v-tec controller. check out Honda Hybrid towards the bottom there is the part number to the rpm switch at summit
to use the ecu to activate v-tec is a little bit more money. i have heard you lose a few hp by going the controller route (but don't know for sure). have also heard you get better gas milage with the ecu. i had my car hooked up both ways. something cool i noticed is, when you have the ecu in and you get an ecu error code it's different then in a 4th gen. you don't look for a flashing LED. your check engine light will flash instead ![]() for the ecu route you will need a p28 ecu, wiring harness, distributor, and 4 wire O2 sensor. when i drove the shoc v-tec for the first time....i got the same feeling as when i drove my Si  for the first time after owning all Dx's

yea i did the same swap into my CRX when i had it and i had to get a RPM Activated Switch. A switch to turn the VTEC on and off is a very bad idea because it will burn up the solenoid and "bye bye" to your VTEC ever again. Anyways, There is a couple different wires on there and i believe this website http://www.angelfire.com/ca/DrOhm/hybrid.html or this one
http://www.geocities.com/crx288/d16z6swap.html (not sure which one) has a good diagram on how to wire it all up if you get the switch from summit. You also need a 30 AMP relay to hook all the wires up to. If you badly need help then you can just email me @ [email protected] and i'll be glad to help because i did the swap myself. Good luck man. |
