check it out

So I tried spray painting my visors a while ago because i just don't care for tan interior. Well at first they were ok, then the tan started to show through the paint. And besides, the visors felt like a rock because of the paint. So i got bored today, went to the fabric store and got some black fabric (4yds for like $5). Here's some pics.

Here is the old spray painted fabric...

Here is the visor stripped...

Here is the finished product...

Did both visors. They both turned out way better than i expected. What do ya guys think?

Re: check it out

Pretty nice. Better than what i did, i just removed mine altogether, i never used them, and they were looking gaudy with the fabric peeling. But i like what you did.

Re: check it out

Looks awesome. How do you recover them like that? I have an extra sunvisor from ebay that I'm mounting my AFC into and it needs to be recovered also. Maybe a little tech article on it?

Re: check it out

Ok, since i have some time on my hands right now i guess i'll make a write-up.

Take the visors out. If you need help doing this then you have a problem lol. Go to a local fabric store and get some fabric. I got 4 yds because it was on sale and i got extra just incase i messed up. You will need scissors, the fabric, a flathead screwdriver, spray adhesive, super/krazy glue, pen knife, and a lot of patience.

Start by ripping apart the visor. Be careful in doing this, making sure not to crack anything. This is where the flathead helped me seperate the visor. Get it seperated as much as possible. From here you'll be able to take the old shitty fabric off the visor since it's tucked in. Just strip it all off (try not to rip it though). Next is where you'll need the pen knife. You'll notice there is a lot of old material glued on to the visor. Use the pen knife to scrape as much of it off as possible. Now take the old fabric and lay it out (like i did in the first pic i posted). Lay out your new fabric nice and flat. Lay the old piece of material over the new stuff and straighten it all out. Now use something to trace around. (I used a bright green sharpie). When tracing around the old stuff, MAKE SURE to leave at least an extra half inch on the outside. Also mark the holes for the garage door opener, mirror, etc. After you do that, cut it out with scissors. Doesn't matter if your edges are shitty, no one will see them anyway. Once you have it cut out, read the following.

For the driver side (garage door opener) visor. This one is a bit tricky, especially if you're trying to take off the garage door opener to paint the plastic piece (like i did with mine). To get that sucker out of there, you'll see a black box under the garage door opener. There are plastic clips on each side. Use the flathead to pry the clips and it will drop down. Now you'll notice that the plastic piece for the buttons is too wide to fit. Just tilt it/play with it till it comes out. From here, there are wires connected to the door opener. You can disconnect the wires, and the black box is out. Now pry open the black box. From here you'll be able to see how to take out the plastic button piece. Go paint it any color you want. Once you get that all done with, and you're ready to re-fabric the visor, make sure the hole for the door opener was properly cut. This is where i started on this visor. I purposely cut the hole a bit smaller than i was suppose to so i can *force* it around the plastic piece so it'd fit nice and snug. Afer that, wrap the rest of the fabric around the visor until you are satisfied with how it looks. Make sure the edges are long enough to tuck under! When you're ready, take your spray glue and spray the visor, starting on one side. After that, go to the next side. Make sure you make it a nice and tight fit, so it doesn't have wrinkles. After doing that, and you're satisfied with how it looks, it's time to finish it up. Take the edges, spray them with the glue and tuck them under so they don't move. From here, once you did every side, take your super glue. This is what you're going to use to seal it shut. Super glue the inside endges. After you're done doing that, take your C clamps (i used 3) and clamp each side of the visor and let it sit for an hour or so. That's it.

For the passenger side visor (mirror). This one was a bigger bitch than the first one. Basically same thing, except the hole you'll be making in the fabric is bigger. Follow the steps above. The only reason i found this one harder was because after getting the mirror out and got the fabric to fit, it was almost impossible for me to get the mirror back in there like it used to be. But like i said, use the steps above to do this one. By the time you finish this one, it's about time to take the C clamps off the other visor to use on this visor.

Just take your time with everything, and do it right. You'll be happy with the results.

Re: check it out

Hmmm I posted a thanks to you yesterday but apparently it didn't post it. So, I'll post it again.

Thanks man, now I'll have something to work on on my day off from work. Do you think I'll have any problems if I remove my garage door opener and use a dremel to cut out an opening for my AFC and build it up with some foam to make it a little thicker around the sides of my opening?

you shouldn't have any problems with doing that. just like i posted, take your time and do it right. if you do, you'll be 100% satisfied with the results. i actually thought about mounting my blitz turbo timer into the drivers side visor, but i think i'm going to fabricate it into the piece that runs across the top. maybe i'll start on that tonight if i get really bored lol.
