Engine Knock
I got a 1994 Lincoln Continental...
The engine knocks pretty loudly starting last week. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem. I read switching to a higher wieght oil would help somewhat and getting it changed. Right now im using 5w30. The engine is high mile one. On idle the engine doesnt knock but when i give it some gas it knocks. Any help would be appreciated. |

Re: Engine Knock
Hmmm. sounds like you may have spun a bearing. Its possible that its piston slap or low oil pump pressure, but they don't typically show up all of a sudden like that. Anyway you look at it, its probably time for a new (rebuilt) engine. Sorry for the bad news, but most of the problems that cause the word "knock" to come out of the owner's mouth means at least a partial engine teardown.

Gonna change the oil today. Hoping it will maybe work. The sound seems to come from the top of the engine.

Deciding i didnt want to get my cast covered in oil ill wait till tomarrow to change the oil (cast comes off tomarrow). I did put another quart in the engine seeing as it was about half down but well within the standards.
Sounds like somone is shaking a spraypaint can under the under the hood. Seems like once it hits about 2nd gear the knocking or tapping whatever the noise is seems to quiet down alot. Any more suggestions as seeing i really dont want to pull the engine. |

Re: Engine Knock
At this point my money is on an internal mechanical problem. If its due to low oil pressure and/or excessive valve clearances, try heavier (much heavier) oil, such as 20w-50.
Yes, I know its not ideal for cold weather start up, but at this point you have nothing to lose. Likley you will need an engine rebuild so heavier oil may help you squeeze a few more miles out of it. However, many mechanical problems, like a spun bearing, piston slap, loose cam chain etc will not be improved by heavier oil. |

Re: Engine Knock
you may be able to lessen the noise with a different weight oil... the bottom line is you still have a mechanical problem, and you only put a band-aid on it. take it to a reputable shop to have it properly diagnosed

Had a couple friends who are much more intelligent on car engines than me, although im decent with honda engines. They both said its one of the spark plugs not firing or not firing very well causing this. SO im gonna change those out along with the oil today.

Re: Engine Knock
Not a spark plug, but it won't hurt to change them. In your last post you described it sounding like the rattling of a paint can. It could be a valvetrain issue which might be lucky in your case, but I think the spun bearing is more likely.
If it sounds like a snick snick its probably a valve issue. If it sounds like a little hammer hitting the block its a spun bearing or piston slap.
