Thumbs up 1.49 in the 60' reaps a 11.131 @ 123.75!

What a way to cap an awesome season. David Hawkins of Twosrus.com trailered Hyde out to Island Dragway in New Jersey this evening for some open track grudge racing.

After previously running a new PB of 11.44@120 with the ignition breaking up, we wanted to get one more shot at Hyde's 200K motor before it comes out. A new MSD blaster coil and tach adapter was installed with my "old" MSD box.

I'll give the runs in order and then give the full story for those interested.
Notice that running the Pro tree all year has really improved my R/Ts on the sportsman tree ~ on the first few runs. Then I woke up realized that R/T doesn’t matter when I am shooting for a new personal best, so I slowed down at the line and took my time.

R/T=.528 60'=1.953 1/8=[email protected] 1/4=[email protected]
R/T=.168 60'=1.583 1/8=[email protected] 1/4=[email protected]
R/T=..031 60'=1.689 1/8=[email protected] 1/4=[email protected]
R/T=.069 60'=1.521 1/8=[email protected] 1/4=[email protected]
R/T=.135 60'=1.819 1/8=[email protected] 1/4=[email protected]
R/T=1.385 60'=1.780 1/8=[email protected] 1/4=[email protected]
R/T=.418 60'=1.900 1/8=[email protected] 1/4=[email protected]
R/T=.431 60'=1.616 1/8=[email protected] 1/4=[email protected]
R/T=.35260'=1.633 1/8=[email protected] 1/4=[email protected]
R/T=.291 60'=1.498 1/8=[email protected] 1/4=[email protected]

Right click, save as here for the 11.131 Video
Enjoy the sparks and fireworks of the 2-step! :evillaugh

The near lane is Scott Barton (sab0276) … the cool guy that just set a couple of land speed records. He went 12.7 @ 109 with his ATS CT27-turboed MR2.

Right click, save as here for video of this run from Scott's In-Car Camera!

So, the first run I completely forgot how to drag race. My focus wasn’t there and I was too stressed out about only getting one run if Hyde went boom.

Second run: 22 psi, pretty clean, but was overheating after the finish.

Third run: 22 psi, pretty clean, but over heated more.

Fourth run: 23 psi, awesome launch, great shifts and a new personal best of 12.216 @ 122.92 No overheating?!

Fifth run: cranked boost up, hit 25.7 psi (yikes) and was off the chart of the tune for the car. It went pig rich and bogged to hell so I got off of it and cruised to the finish.

Sixth run: Turned boost down to 24 psi, was not terrible clean. I got thrown off by a delayed light. I got out of the 2-step and had to restart it so I had a delayed launch. Car was really overheating now.

Seventh run: I was overheating as I rolled onto the track, so I had the heater on full blast … got it down to operating temps and skipped the burnout (hence the poor 60’). This was my first race against Scott Barton. I went 11.7 to his 13.3 (he was adjusting things all night). After this run Hyde was really over heating and would not come back down in temps … so I parked it.

We waited an hour, topped off the coolant, removed the complete intake and ran straight turbo … and Hyde would not start (sigh). We jumped him and started him up and I rolled down to the lanes.

Eight run: Good launch, good 2nd gear shift, the car felt amazing by ˝ track … figured I just need a solid 4th gear shift and I was dreaming of 10s. Unfortunately when I nailed 4th gear I popped an intercooler hose (first one in 2+ years). I am extremely excited that I still went 11.55 @ 108 with no 4th gear power. Even more exciting was the 99 mph ˝ track! [i]amazing how taking off the air filter and intake gained 2 mph in the ˝-track.

Ninth run: This was one of my favorite drag races of all time. It was a hugely built 1956 Chevy. One rear tire was as wide as both of mine (no exaggeration!). This car was a beast. He killed me at the light with a .018 RT to my sleeping .352.
We both went 1.6 in the 60’ … we both went 4.7 in the 330 and 7.3 in the ˝ track … but I hit the top of 3rd and started reeling him in hard. I was so excited! I couldn’t believe I was reeling in this purpose built drag machine. I passed him at the finish with a 11.30@ 123 to his 11.56 @ 115.99. He took the win by .07, but he had a .334 advantage at the light.

Last run (#10): Scott and I were the third pair of cars to race after a sport bike. Don’t you know the sport bike flips it at ˝ track during his second wheelie of that run. He was okay and the bike was fine, but they had some clean up to do.

We were going to be the last run of the night. Hyde’s oil light came on … was over heating and was generally just sitting in his own smoke. Hyde’s PCV is now chimney.

I rolled up and completely flubbed the burnout. I thought about it … last run of the night. Last run of the season …. So I backed ‘er up and nailed a much better 2nd burnout.

And that’s when I nailed the run: .29 R/T …1.498 in the 60’!! and the rest was history.
11.131 @ 123.75 at 23 psi of boost.

Hyde is still running. He drove into the trailer under his own power.
I had a 5-mile drive home from the place where I store my trailer … Hyde did that 5-mile with the fuel light on and the oil light … lol. He still lives, but will have a new heart next year.

Thanks ATS Racing & NoShoes for an awesome year of racing.
… thanks David Hawkins for being an awesome support personell!

Re: 1.49 in the 60' reaps a 11.131 @ 123.75!

I forgot to mention, on the 11.1 run:
*the car had been sitting idling for 20-30 minutes while they cleaned up the flipped motorcyle ... not sure how much the heated up my intercooler

*That was the only run I did with my headlights popped up. I completely forgot to pup them down

* I was probably still .5-1 psi above where we stopped tuning.

So, I think a stock-bottom end MR2 could go 10s ... I think I have just beat my car for too many years to prove that.

Thanks Mason RsX ... I appreciate that. It has been a very long season 16 events (15 in Hyde).
I really wanted to run a 10 on the factory engine, but no such luck.

Next season will probably start in April with an open track run and then I will hit the National NHRA event at Englishtown. I think the dates for that will be April 30/May1 2006.

I should hae another 100 rwhp by then ... so 10s are coming.

Re: 1.49 in the 60' reaps a 11.131 @ 123.75!

Pretty nice man. Glad to hear I"m not the only purpose built car running slow short times (the 56 chevy, lol).

1.49 60' is pretty awesome. Pretty big difference from 1.60s aint it? Good job man. I look forward to hearing what you can accomplish next year with new blood. You and I both will have new blood next season.

My season's about over too. I will be racing at my first ever NHRA track tomorrow though. I'm pretty excited about that. Its at the Bluegrass Raceway Park in Owensville, KY. ITs not an NHRA national event or anything, but its an NHRA member track and tomorrow they are having a NHRA "King of the Track" show.

Anyways congrats on the awesome 60' and the 11.13 pass. Just think, first of the season and on a Saturday night that very well could have been a 10.99 pass.

Thanks everyone ... I can't even explain what 1.4/1.5 in the 60 feels like. It is nearly disorienting.

Good luck Chevy. Do you really think 7.3 in the 1/8 is slow?!

Congrats on your runs. Can't you find some open track somewhere nearby and take Hyde out for another run, kind of like an extension to the season? I mean he still runs, right? Why not just blow him up?

Thanks. I didnt do any good, but it was still fun! I did get back in the 1.5s though in the 60s, lol.

And no, I dont think 7.30s is slow, but I cut my teeth in my car when it woudl have ran 6.70s or better. But even at that, I still would have been one of the "slow" cars in my class, lol. And now at 7.40s, I'm really one of the slow cars, lol.

Re: 1.49 in the 60' reaps a 11.131 @ 123.75!

if you did decide to take her out more and finish that motor off... would it be possible for you to turn up the boost a tad and try to run a lil faster? that would be neat.

.... it looks like we are heading back to the track on November 13.

We'll be looking to turn the boost up from 22-23 psi to 25-26 psi of boost.
