Re: help replacing a rack and pinion

You may need to loosen the subframe and drop it down enough to get the rack to clear. You need to support the subframe so it will not drop all the way to ground when the rear bolts are removed.

Re: help replacing a rack and pinion

Mr. Tutt, Mr. Way2old, or anyone
I think I may need your help with the same problem, I have a 98 Taurus and about to start replacing the rack & pinion. Is there any specialty tool needed to perform this job? I printed out the Do It Yourself Instructions from Autozone web page. Do you think this is suffecient and if not do you recommend any site I can find accurate instructions for removal and installing. Another thing the leaks I have are from the line on top of the rack and from the boot. Can these be fix or changed without removing the whole R/P? Thanks in advanced for your help.

Re: help replacing a rack and pinion

If the fluid is leaking from the bellows, the seal inside the rack is leaking. You can replace the seal, but to do it properly you need to remove the rack anyway. I would purchase another rack and have a warranty on it. There are no special tools that are needed to remove the rack. Good luck.
