1.4 16v Dual Carb

Hi, I'm a new member to this forum!

I own a UK Honda Civic 1.4 16v dual carb 1989.
Can someone enlighten me? I have heard that it is possible to fit induction kits on a car with carbs(?) is this true?
Also, everyone here seems to have the Civic Si's
anyone out there with the 1.4?

Another question, do most of u guys paint the car yourselves? i.e door handles, bumpers etc...

Also, can i make my OEM exhaust sound any louder?! (without getting a new back box that is.)

Thanks

First off all, welcome to the AF Forum
Second maybe you could post this thread also in the Europe section of AF,
because you have a UK Civic, maybe someone there could help you also???

No one here has a carbed 4thgen civic, but it is possible to turbo or SC a carbed engine. And to make your exhaust louder(what the heck for?!?!?) buy an aftermarket tip at your local auto parts store, very cheap item.

Actually Bleebdat, I've owned one as that's the only model that came out in Australia as a GL (onless you've name changed me to "No one" )

Anyway, back to Myk888's questions.

Firstly, the engine is a D15B SOHC 16v (1488cc) engine. The Keihin/Mikuni carb setup is excellent - we're talking a 98 bhp engine (JDM/Aussie spec - you guys prolly have more emmission controls than we do). It's one issue is that the air filter is mounted to the back of the carbs and pickup is simply a pipe that goes to where most cars have an airbox. That's an issue, as it is picking up hot air from the engine bay.

Now, adding a pod filter to the front of this is not a good solution for two reasons. If you remove the standard filter at the back of your engine bay you increase turbulence and mess with the mixture a bit due to the large oval surface area that is usually smoothed out by the filter. Leaving the standard filter in and then adding a pod filter will choke the engine a bit as the air has to be pulled through two filters.

To make it cool induction - simply run a pipe from the fatory inlet down to a cool pickup point - make sure you have some anti-water setup, H2O + engine = paypacket^50.

However, if you are talking adding fuel injection, forget it. It is too much hassle and not worth the effort. Those carbs are damn good and can be tuned for 130 bhp with a lot of other mods (overbore, bump compression, cam, extractors, exhaust). The engine responds well to tuning and there are twin webber packages available, but a waste of money if you aren't going full house.

Exhaust sound would require a new muffler and tip. Get a sports exhaust and replace the hotdog pre-muffler with a piece of pipe. Better still, get a new cat-back setup and it should sound better and give you a bit more power. Aussie/JDM headers on the D15B are 4-2-1 config already.

Good Luck with it

Yeah I have one.

Its a 1.4 16v Twin Carb GL.... is yours a GL as well ? Not sure what it ment but all the GLs I have seen have colour coded bumbers and I guess some of the other SIs and stuff did too but I aint seen many around otherwise I would have one hehe.

Also u can make your exhaust really loud by drilling holes in the back box lol, but it wont pass an MOT and I dont know what it would do to the performance hehe..

Gonna try a kinda induction setup on mine, just trying to find the right size tubing at the mo

Hey myk888 welcome to the forum

I also had a carbed 4th gen, but it was a single carb 1.3.
Your engine is actually pretty rare. It's Europe only and only produced in 88 and 89 (1396cc 90hp). The 90 and 91 version were DPFI and the displacement needed to grow to 1493 to make the same power. Carbs are

If you are not sure if you want to paint the parts yourself get some door handles from a junk yard so that it doesn't matter if you f*ck things up. If that all work well and you know the best way to do it you could paint your bumpers that way.

As for the muffler sound, I wouldn't recommend drilling holes in your stock muffler. If you want sound just get a loud aftermarket muffler or something.
just my 0.02€

Hay my one is 1991 and its only 1396cc with twin carbs too , so they cant have only been made in 88 and 89. Also mine was registered just before the change over to the new model.. 5th gen..

Oh yeah maybe I should have said.. I was j/k about the drilling bit hehe.. My nate did it to his Micra before he scrapped it lol it did make quite a good sound but he got pulled by the cops about three times for having a blowing tail pipe hehe..

Interesting, I thought that in every country in Europe the 1.4 dual carb was replaced in 1990 with the DPFI 1.5i GL due to emisions.
Maybe Wales was different? Is there a 1.5i GL in your country?
Or can it be that your Civic is a late '89 or very early '90 that was registered in '91?
